I went to pay my Capital One balance this week and noticed that they had charged me a late fee of $39.00 with an additional finance fee of $14.91.  Apparently, even though I made a payment for MORE than the minimum payment due, and I paid well in advance of the due date, Capital One thinks it's reasonable to charge me LATE fees.

When I contacted them alerting them to the mistake they proceeded to tell me that I must have either paid late and/or paid too little. I don't know if they're thick, or if they were deliberating pretending to not understand my complaint.

I contacted them again explainging that if they don't believe me they should look at my payment record to confirm my claims. I paid more than I owed and I paid early. The person who contacted me then proceeded to tell me that since I had paid TOO EARLY that they applied the money to the month before thereby making me late for the current month.

How early did I pay? Apparently 3 days too early. I paid on November 2 for the month of November and I guess if I want to pay for November I can't pay before the 5th.

We're disputing 3 days...3 days early NOT late. Seriously? They refuse to refund the late fee and finance charges that together nearly equal $55. I've never heard of a company charging someone for paying a bill too early!

I'm dropping this bank. They deserve to fail. You can't ripoff and steal from your clients and expect no one to get mad about it.

Since the original post, Capital One has notified me that they will refund the $39.00 late fee as a gesture of good faith. No word yet on the $14.00 finance fees associated with the late fee. We'll see what happens. It still makes me mad that I had to go four rounds with them to get them to to the right thing, but I'm glad they finally did.
