When applying for new license tags, my wife was tricked into applying with a site designed to look like the Illninois DMV site. Instead of getting tags, she is getting a "manau" that tell how to get tags. We saw a bill for $1.00, a bill for $3.99, then a bill for $19.99. At that point, it was evident she had been scammed.

I am contesting the bills on my VISA card. I also intend to start proceedings to make the State Department of Illinois aware that this site exists, and is ahead of the real DMV site. See if they can block it.

There are multiple disclaimers

“Such long statements are usually there to hide things that most people will not agree to. They know that no one woill read them.”

Failure to read clearly posted informative statements is careless and inattentive. Customers can’t be forced to protect themselves.

“An honest approach would be to place a large warning sign saying this is not a site to renew licenses.”

A company advertises the goods and services they offer. It would be fruitless to declare what goods and services they don’t provide. There is no need for a hot dog vendor to disclose he doesn’t sell ice cream. There is no need for a camel salesman to disclose he doesn’t sell cattle.

She only had to read one of the multiple disclaimers such as the one she acknowledged upon entering the website.

why do they need such an intensive, long "agreement" statemant. .

Such long statements are usually there to hide things that most people will not agree to. They know that no one woill read them.

An honest approach would be to place a large warning sign saying this is not a site to renew licenses. After placing their site in front of the REAL Illinois (or any other state being saught) most resonable people would think they were renewing their license.

But then I did say honest, didn't I?

When you go on line to apply for a renewal, be very carefyl. If you don't have the renewal notice with the actual site name, look it up in a phone book, or go your local DMV office to get the address. While this operation is technically legal, it is designed to get the unwary into buying something they can get for free at the REAL DMV site.

The website is forthright from the onset

There was no reason for your wife to think she was on an official DMV website. Upon entering the website she clicked the ‘CONTINUE’ button after reading and confirming agreement to: By clicking "continue" you acknowledge that this site is privately owned and is not affiliated with any government agency

Also, posted at the top of every page on their website: car-registration.org is a privately owned website that is not owned or operated by any government agency

Also, posted at the bottom of every page on their website: car-registration.org is a privately owned website that is not owned or operated by any government agency

Posted on the webpage you provided: The services we provide are available for free in the official sites or local offices. You can purchase for $23.98 and download our comprehensive guide and resources…

Nowhere on the website do they claim to provide auto tags. Your wife made an incorrect assumption as to the service provided. I agree it’s a lousy deal but the seller’s website is upfront and not deceptive. The seller honored the agreement. There was no scam.
