My son had lasik correction. He was offered payment terms of 18 momths at 0% interest free and accepted. He received a credit card in the mail from a credit card compant name "GE CareCredit". He made payments for 17 months and expected to pay the balance of $500 on the 18th payment to take advance of the 0% interest free. He received his statement in the mail for the 18th payment and an interest of $970+ was added to the balance of $500.

He called to inquired and was told that the first month started on day of service, not statement date, therefore, technically, the 18th month that was 0% interest expired after the 17th payment (Nov. 9). The interest was then calculated based on the total of $3,500 charged to the account for the entire 18 months. He argued that he owed only interest to the balance of $500 if the 0% interest had indeed expired and agreed to pay it in full, however, CareCredit insisted that he owes the total of $970+ interest on top of the balance of $500. Is this legal? I think we were deliberately deceived!

I tried calling CareCredit on his behalf but they will not talk to me about his account. They were very rude and short. not helpful in anyway. It is obvious they don't care about their customers.

I reported GE CareCredit to every online consumer complaint site I can find, including Chicago Tribune, Suntimes, and the Better Business Bureau. Finally,
a week ago, the BBB was able to make GE CareCredit settle with a full reimbursement of $970+ interest that they charged my son. Everyone should report them to the BBB so they can stop ripping people off!!

On the bigger ticket items I've purchased on no interest promos, in small print, they state that the promo lasts: FROM DATE OF PURCHASE. You have to look carefully and pay attention to what they are telling you on your statement. What you end up with is 11 and a half months of no interest, not 12 months no interest. I usually make the final payment on the eleventh month and PAY WELL IN ADVANCE of the due date. That doesn't always help cause a company like hsbc, for best buy, took 12 or 13 days to credit my payment to my account. I've posted about this before. YOU have to pay attention to what is written on your statement. If your son didn't look carefully at his statement for 12 months, that's on him. If it wasn't printed on his statement, that's on them. Did you ask your son to look at a copy of his statement? They won't tell you anything over the phone.

With all credit, interest starts on the day the debt happened.
