My husband and I purchased a 2003 Ford Windstar in August of 2004 at Carlton Massey.

The Ford Windstar had about 7,000 miles on it at the time of purchase. It was not a prior rental or anything so the people that we were dealing with at Carlton Massey told us that our warranty would start as if the mileage were at 0, not 7,000 miles. So in essence we would have the 36,000 mile or 3 year bumper to bumper warranty plus an additional 7,000 miles on top of that.
I received a letter in the mail, July of 2006, stating that our warranty was up and we could pay to purchase an extended warranty. I immediately called the Ford company that was listed on this letter and they said, "their warranty began in 2003 on this vehicle as soon as it was in Carlton Massey's lot".

I contacted Carlton Massey and said that is not what we were told when we purchased the minivan, they said, "Hey we don't know what to tell you, the warranty is up next month."

My husband went to Carlton Massey and argued (which he should not have had to), with the manager that gave us bogus information when we purchased the Windstar and the manager said, "fine we will honor the 43,000 mile warranty, but only at this Ford dealer, (Carlton Massey).
We have moved to another state and I have 33,000 miles on my minivan, the electric slide doors stopped working, the locks do not work propery and I cannot take it to another Ford dealer as Carlton Massey said they were the only ones we could take it to.

We live over 600 miles away from Pocomoke, Maryland now and I can't get my van serviced for these problems.
Under no certain terms were we informed that the warranty would expire 2 years after we purchased the Windstar and the manager actually told us, if your van breaks down out of state, the ford dealers in whatever state you are in can call us if the van is over it's 36,000 miles and we will tell them that your mileage is extended to 43,000 miles".

Now they have changed their entire "story" after we purchased the van and are saying we have to drive over 600 miles to have the van service under the extended mileage warranty.

We have purchased 3 Ford vehichles in the past 10 years and sadly to say will never purchase another Ford vehichle if this matter is not resolved.

Don't blame Ford for the dealerships deception. As mentioned already, find out the in-service date from Ford, and to whom the vehicle was first titled to.

good luck in your resolution, looks like the dealership hoodwinked you

Anything over 5000 miles is a used car

I forgot,

Anything with over 5000 miles must be titled and sold as a used car in Maryland. It needs to be MD State inspected, and is considered a pre-owned vehicle as far as the warranty is considered. The warranty is up as far as Ford is concerned.

The warranty starts when delivered to the first owner

The warranty does not start when it gets to the lot. The warranty starts when delivered to the first owner, or registered as a demo. Since the car was a year old with 7K miles, it was either already sold once (therefore a used car) or the dealerships loaner vehicle. If it was titled before and sold to you as a new car (looks at the sales order) the deal can be undone and you will get all of your money back. If it was sold to you as a used car, you are out of luck. I would run a carfax and it will tell you when it was placed in service, and to whom. Ford can also tell you this, it is called an in-service date.

I now reside in New Hampshire

First of all let me clarify something. I did sign my address as Girdletree, I now reside in New Hampshire and made a mistake when I originally registered with this site.
I am not sure if we received anything in writing, I have to look through my boxes that I haven't unpacked yet.

When we were in Girdletree however, I do not remember my husband mentioning anything about having the extended warranty in writing. This was the first vehichle that we purchased as "new" with mileage so we weren't sure of the paperwork involved in the sale. The sales people at Carlton Massey were very reassuring and we were naive to say the least.

I did contact Ford and they said to resolve this matter with the dealer. At that point my husband spoke with the manager and that's when the manager said they would honor the extension but only at Carlton Massey. As I've already written, this is not what we were told when purchasing the minivan, they said we could have it serviced anywhere, if it was over the 36,000 miles the Ford dealer from any state could call them to verify the extension.

J Indy, I am well aware of a typical warranty but what you are not understanding here is that we were told something quite different by the Carlton Massey sales people. We were told that we had a 3 year or 43,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty as of the date we purchased the minivan.

3 years OR 36,000 miles

#11Consumer Suggestion

The manufacturers warranty is for 3 yrs or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Since your van is an '03, and it is now '06, your warranty has expired. The warranty also starts at mile 0, no matter how many miles are on it when you buy it. The dealership can extend it, as your's did, but the extended miles/time can only be honored at dealership you purchased it at. What the dealership and Ford are both telling you is true. The only way to get it fixed under warranty now is to go back to the original dealer.

I noticed you signed your address as Girdletree, MD. I'm a former resident of the Eastern Shore and Girdletree is only 13 miles from Pocomoke City. Also, I assume you didn't get their agreement to extend the warranty in writing?

Isn't the basic 36,000 mile warranty in effect?

If you have less than 36,000 miles on the car isn't the manufacturer's warranty still in effect, or have over 36 months passed (is it 36,000 miles/36 months)? Based on the fact the car only had 7,000 miles on it when you purchased it, it sounds like the original sale was "unwound" by the dealer - most likely the orginal buyer could not be financed.

Did you buy as a new car or as a used vehicle? If it was purchased as "new", I would start getting in touch with Ford corporate customer service and ask them for help. The problems you are describing should not happen with so few miles on the car. Or, make arrangements for Carlton Massey to have you take the vehicle to a local Ford dealership and have Carlton Massey pay the charges.

Be firm - you'll need to start dealing with the service manager or owner at Carlton Massey.
