I bought a new Carver 42 ss last year. Almost every new Carver comes with Volvo Diesel marine engines with the volvo IPS system. Carver heavily markets its quality along with a "bumper to bumper" 2 year warranty. In short this 550,000.00 boat has been a total pain. It literally breaks every other trip. The depth finder has never worked properly and the dealer can't seem to get it fixed. The biggest problem is the Volvo diesels and the IPS system. The boat has ceased working at sea three times. The engines go into "limp mode" whuch means you are limited to 6 knots. One engine failed completely and had to be replaced. The latest debacle is that both engines failed about 15 miles offshore for now reason. One engine failed to start at all and the other would not go into gear. This is with one new engine and another with less than 200 hours! I was adrift for two hours until sea tow showed up. There have been other less significant problems as well. Through the dealer I asked Carver and Volvo to buy the boat back or present some other reasonable alternative. They refuse to even respond!!! Think twice about buying Carver or any yacht with an IPS system.
