On 6/19/07, I received a phone call at 10:30 pm, after my family had gone to bed. The caller identified his company as "CCA, Inc." but refused to provide a business address or phone number. He claimed to be representing the federal Department of Education, and repeatedly asked whether the last four digits of my social security number were XXXX. (I told him that I wouldn't discuss my SS#. My number is not what he was claiming, nor have I ever had any sort of educational loan or obligation, or any other direct or indirect dealings with the Department of Education.)

When I explained that he was violating NJ's telemarketing law (unsolicited calling, no prior business relationship) the gentleman became irate and refused to give me his contact information, insisting that he had already provided it at the beginning of the call, and questioning why he should give it to me if I wouldn't reciprocate by giving him basic information like my SS#.

When I persisted, he connected me with his supervisor, who claimed that CCA did not have a business address. He also said I could just use caller ID, and when I said I didn't have it, he berated me for not living in 2007. I told him that I was ending the call, that I did not want to receive any subsequent phone calls, and that I wanted his contact information in order to pass it along to state officials. He then told me that the calls would continue, and hung up the phone.
