Complaint Review: CenturyLink

CenturyLink Felony Theft/Embezzlement Fort Collins Colorado

Centurylink defrauded me out of over $1,200 USD by keeping a duplicate account open for nearly 2 years. Regular deductions were taken out of my checking account in $60 increments for nearly 2 years while their internal systems failed to verify an address and their bills were returned. They promptly refunded me for the past 3 months, leaving a $1,200 balance remaining of what I was defrauded.

The frustrating part is that I'm sure I closed this account when I moved out. The "disconnection specalist" must have refused to close my account when I called in. Quite the scam if they're incentivised to "convince" people to keep their accounts open and have to do this a certain number of times per month to keep their job. This is speculation, but I'm not an isolated case with CenturyLink account fraud. Anecdotally, I've heard of at least 3 other cases among family and friends.

It is an interesting perspecitve.  Here you accuse them of fraud and theft because they took money out of your account for almost 2 years.  Yet, this really only proves one thing..YOUR failure to manage your bank account.

You talk about their internal systems failing, well so did yours by not noticing it for 2 years.  Now, if you say "Well $60 isn't a lot so I didn't notice it".  Then you can't come back and complain that they took it.  You see if you were properly balancing your account every month, you would have found this out the first month it happened...not 24 months later.  Even if it took you 3 months to realize it you would have gotten all of your money back as you see by them crediting the last 90 days.

By the way...even the Federal Governemnt through the FCBA and other regulations only gives you 60 days to dispute a transaction.  So by them giving you 3 months they are actually doing more than required by law.  They could have said here is 2 months worth now go pound sand.

The scary thing is that you say you know of at least 3 other cases...again that just shows that apparently your lack of financial education isn't isolated either.  As such I would highly suggest you all get together and have a "bank reconcilliation" party where you review every one of your statements to make sure you have no other charges you are not aware of.
