CertainTeed Corporation We paid good money for junky shingles. Valley Forge, Pennsylvania
During the 90s, CertainTeed created a "green" shingle and basically put the equivalent of cardboard in the middle of their shingles.
Unfortunately, unknowingly, we purchased their shingles when we had our home professionally re-roofed. The shingles that were chosen for the job were one step below designer shingle costs - they were not cheap - and were warrantied for 25 years. We purchased them because they WERE CertainTeed - a good name in roofing.
Ten years into the warranty, the shingles curled up on themselves and eventually broke off. The outer coating of the shingles filled our gutters. They were disintegrating. We called the roofers and were told to remove a shingle, take pictures, and send everything in to CertainTeed. We did that.
CertainTeed replied and offered us $200 for our $25,000, 10 year old roof that was still under warranty! Incensed, we refused to take their offer. About then, a class action suit card came in the mail, so we joined on. Time passed and the remaining tar paper was hardly keeping us dry, when the results of the class action suit were announced. CertainTeed gave us $500 for our still-under-warranty $25,000 roof. We took the money and re-roofed our house again. You can be sure we don't have CertainTeed shingles on our roof!!!! In the meantime, both my husband and myself are driving 13 year old vehicles, because our car budget is sitting on our roof.
If this honest-to-goodness true story doesn't sway people from purchasing CertainTeed products, nothing will. We hope, though, that it does. Avoid CertainTeed products because the company does not honor its warranty.
