Complaint Review: Certegy Check Services

Complaint Description:
On 12/13/07 I went to Murphy USA to make a fuel and beverage purchase at their South Mcoll Road, Edinburg, Texas location. I handed the cashier a personal check totaling $44.60. My check was denied. Note, they did accept my debit card which is attached to the same account. I asked her what check verification service was used. She said "Let me get my manager." The manager told me Certegy provides all of their verifications. She gave me a toll free number to call. I explained to her I do not have any history of writing bad checks and that my check is good. I provided the clerk and manager both my drivers license and a valid check. I went home at called the Certegy customer service number. The employee, named Shawnell employee number 2059 told me You do not have a negative mark on your check writing file. When I asked her why my check was denied if I do not have any "negative file" why they did not accept my check. She said they have a "security measure" in place that detects fraud. I explained to her, what specific reason was my check denied. She said, "I cannot give you the specific security measures that are in place sir" This sounds like some kind of discriminatory practice to not accept a valid check from a person that has never had a check bounce. Another check I wrote for Dillard's at the McAllen Texas location was denied. Turns out that they use the same Check verification agency! I am beyond angry and was humiliated in public because of their unethical check rejection. They have no reason to deny my checks. I frequently use checks for other purchases from retailers all the time that do not use Certegy as their Check verification vendor.

Your Desired Resolution:
I want this company to accept my checks from any retailer I choose that uses Certegy as their check verification vendor. I want them to remove whatever security flag or alert that is attached to my name that is preventing me from writing checks.
