I wrote a check for $66.15 on 4/23/04 to Marshalls dept store. On 4/27/04 the check was returned NF. On 5/7/04 the check was returned NF. On or around 5/7/04, I received a first notice of returned check redeposit. This noticed stated that the check had been paid by Certegy and that if the check did not clear upon redeposit, I would be liable for the face value of the check plus a $25.00 fee. The notice also indicated that I had 30 days to respond.

On 5/21/04, $66.15 was withdrawn from my account without a check number. I do not have a problem paying the face value of the check but I do have a problem with $66.15 being withdrawn from my account without a check, and without my authorizing it. If Certegy can withdraw money from my account without a check, I should not be liable for a fee.

Telecheck not very easy to work with.

I bounced a check, approximatley 5 months ago, that was written to Dollar Tree for about $45.00. I knew it bounced when I received the notice from my bank. I waited to see if it would get run back thru and it never did. I got a letter from TRS demanding payment plus a bounced check fee of $30. Not a problem. I owed the money. A few days after our paycheck was deposited TRS ran the check thru our account and it cleared. However, it caused another check to bounce so I got charged by my bank for that bounced check- another $30. Then I had a whole other situation with my landlord who had my check bounce- but I won't get into that. I'm glad I hadn't already mailed a money order to TRS during that time. I never received a notice that TRS was going to run my check thru. All this happened within a 21 day period, so it wasn't like I was with holding payment for months. Not the best way to run a business, but I guess if they want their money they'll get it however they can.

Cetergy is not the only one. There is TeleCheck and many others. Consumer Beware, somewhere in the fine print they had a statement posted or printed on the receipt to the effect of "All dishonered checks may be processed electronically and a service charge of $xx.xx can be added" I sympathize with your feelings but that's the way it is these days. My advice get a debit card for store purchases.
