Last year I ordered subscriptions to several magazines from a "fundraiser" for the cheerleading squad at Charlotte High School. I probably wouldn't have even read them, but I did it to support the school as I am an alumni from there, had expected that my kids would go there when they graduate middle school, and of course, she was kind of cute and seemingly very friendly at the time.

I never received any magazines or heard back from them, so I tried calling the school about it. Conveniently for them, they're closed up when I get off work! I guess they would close at 3:00, and I get off work at 5:00 on weekdays. There was no one there on the weekend. I tried emailing them, and their spam filter refused my messages like I am some kind of spammer. Bear in mind that I use a very popular email provider (Gmail) and have never sent anything slightly resembling spam.

I finally got a hold of them on my day off, and after being transferred to and from every imaginable department at the school, I was finally told that it was a scam and they knew nothing about it and would do nothing about it. I asked if they could identify the person responsible and they said "we have been contacted about this before, and it is not our cheerleaders stealing people's money." I informed them that it had to have been because the girl was wearing a real cheerleading uniform that read "TARPONS" (which isn't a mascot you see everyday unless you live in Charlotte County), and they told me to contact the police, and then they hung up.

I can officially say that my children will NOT attend this school. Port Charlotte High or a private school are potential options, but I will NOT have my children attend a school that allows their student not-athletes run around stealing people's money in the school's name without even attempting to punish those responsible beyond merely asking them "did you do it" which is what I'm thinking they did when they were "contacted about this before." Of course they're not going to own up to it!

Also note that this high school is the only "D" rated school in Charlotte county. Even Wikipedia used to point this out in a "Critics" section on the school's article, but someone from the school must have removed it. I sold my class ring from this school for the gold because I no longer affilate myself with this free-for-all institution. This school has taken a nose-dive from when I attended it, we would have been spanked with a paddle board!

Cheerleaders Don't Sell Magazines Door to Door

I have a cheerleading coach at CHS for 20 years.  In that time the cheerleaders have never sold magazines as a fundraiser.  The school did sell old equpment (including cheer) after the hurricane to raise money and clean up.  Perhaps the person who was running this scam had one of those.  I can assure you that our teams have never sold magazines.  They are not allowed to go door to door to raise funds.

I was not contacted about this personally so I don't know the situation that occurred when the school was contacted.  I do know that this report is a disservice to a great group of girls who are a credit to our school and community.  We not only cheer on the sports teams but we have raised over $15000 for Relay for Life in the last ten years.  These are not students who would be involved in a scam of this sort.

I think that this report should have been made to the proper authorities (police) and not put onto the internet to spread untrue facts.  Kathy Vitali, CHS

It's not the school that is bad

My daughter is a cheerleader at Charlotte High School and I can tell you this is a legitimate scam, but the original poster of this complaint is wrong in being so harsh towards the school for this. These girls are doing this on their own time outside of school. The school is not responsible for the actions of these criminals just because they engage in fraud while wearing a cheerleading uniform or any other piece of clothing related to Charlotte High, and the police could much better investigate the incident than the school. This complaint being the first result in the major search engines for charlotte tarpon cheerleaders is hurting the innocent cheerleading squad which my daughter is a part of more than the criminals behind this low-ball scheme.

I'm guessing you're one of the cheerleaders trying to discredit ME because I haven't a clue what you are talking about! Where have I been in a feud with the cheerleaders? Where have I posted that I would post reports here to attack the cheerleader group? I think you have me confused with someone else, I am a mature adult who graduated from Charlotte High School in 1974 and I have better things to do than deliberately attempt to slander a bunch of teenage punks, such as working my socks off to pay for their corrupt school.

There is a long running internet feud between some cheerleaders at this school and another person, that has been playing out on several blogs, wikis, etc. This person posted on one site that they would be posting reports here in an attempt to attack the cheerleader group. I suggest completely ignoring this report as it is false and a strange attempt to discredit the group.
