Received a collection letter from Afni in 2004 stating we owed 237.00 to CHarter Communications. In the 14 years we've lived at our present address, we've never had cable.

We sent a certified letter requesting evidence of the owed bill and did not get a response. March 2007 we received another collection letter were we once again sent a certified letter requesting evidence and stating that this is billed in error.

On March 26, I called the Afni number listed on the collection letter and spoke to a Keika stated the only way to fight this is to file with their FRAUD DEPARTMENT. They said a person with a name SIMILAR to my husband had had cable from Feb. 93 to May 93. They quoted info they could have gotten from the letter we sent them. Nate in the Fraud department said we had to file copies of 4 items to Afni:

1. driver's licence,
2. Soc. security card
3. proof of address in 1993~!!!!
4.letter stating this billing is incorrect.

We also have to file a police report. As my husband was recently divorced at the time and living with relatives, he has no proof of address for this time besides the fact we've only kept papers back 7 years and this bill is 14 years old!

HELP! I don't want to send them any more info!

THEY have to prove you owe it. They can't and that's why they never responded to you.
They have no "fraud department" in terms of protecting you from fraud, only TO DEFRAUD YOU.

This is past the SOL for a lawsuit so that's one issue you won't have to deal with.

Others will respond with exactly what to do but in the meantime, stay off the phone with them.
