Chase bank wanted to charge me 5 dollars to cash a check that was drawn on there bank!!! the manager and her employees seemed very pleased with themselves on how rude they where. I said i never heard ( i have been around a long time 47 years )of such a policy anywhere and there response (with a smile that you would like to smack off) was a month ago we couldn't even cash your check!! A big company like this has to ripoff a consumer who only wanted to cash a check for $30.00 dollars ???Shame on you chase bank i will make sure i tell everyone i know what a ripoff you are!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, actually many national banks do this now.

The bank doesn't know if the account will have sufficient funds at the end of the day, and if they cash a check, and the account is overdrawn and the owner of the account skips, the bank is left holding the bag.
However, I disagree with this practice of charging to cash checks drawn on their own bank - I guess it will depend on state law. I know CA forbids this practice for payroll checks.
