The scam is on craigslist from a person offering to buy your merchandise. They won't call you or give you a return address to send your item. They will tell you that they sent the wrong amount of money to you and that it was supposed to go to someone else-then you are hooked in because you feel bad that they overspent and sent you too much money. They request that you Western Union the funds to someone else but deposit a money order in the amount of $850 into your account then wire the excess money to them.

The money order is international possibly from the Canadian Bank of Commerce but payable to Chase Manhattan bank of Delaware, with your name handwritten into the pay to the order of section. They send you too much money on purpose so that you end up spending your own money and sending it to them.

I wasn't victim of this because I suspected why the individual did not call me or give a return address to send my merchandise to them. My bank helped me by telling the person that they will hold the check for "X" amount of days. The person will tell you (all by e-mail) that their bank will clear the funds in a shorter amount of time so that you send the money. Do not deposit these checks. Set up a paypal account or require a western union from them.

That you didn't fall for this scam.

Craigslist has a section on this that is posted at the top of every page within their "For Sale" section. It's worth checking out:
