In July 2005, I borrowed $500 from Checksmart. When it came due, I went into store #69 in Fort Lauderdale, FL and paid $595 in cash to the store manager, Jean, and continued borrowing money. In January 2007, I was told that Checksmart had reported me to a collection agency and had filed a negative report against me to the credit bureau for the loan that I had paid over 2 years prior plus collection fees. I immediately went to the store and confirmed with the store manager, Steven, that this payday advance had been paid and Steven was kind enough to fax the store receipt showing the proof of payment to the corporate office. At that time, everything had been cleared up and I was promised by Stephanie, a "supervisor" at the corporate office that their records would be updated.

To my dismay and disappointment, Checksmart's records were never corrected and now Checksmart is again demanding payment for monies it received in cash in July of 2005. To make this worse, Jean, Steven nor Stephanie are available to speak with me to confirm that they have proof of my payment or that this is a mistake on the part of Checksmart.

Everyone that I have spoken to at Checksmart over the past 11 months have told me that there is nothing that I can do to prove my case. The last thing that I was told is that Checksmart keeps their records for no more than twelve months at which time the paper receipts are destroyed. In other words, if checksmart decides to claim that it is owed money after they have destoyed their receipts, they simply expect payment or they will destroy credit ratings at their leisure.

I'm being bullied by a big company with the ability to do as it pleases regardless of the consequence to innocent people like me. I have made numerous attempts to resolve this matter with supervisors and managers alike and the bottom line is that they don't care to correct their mistake but instead would rather extort me for money that they have already received by dragging my credit and good name through the mud.

There must be a way to stop this injustice by Checksmart. Please HELP!!!!

I worked for this company a few years ago. Unless the rules have changed, there is no way your information could have been discarded. I remember the times I would have to get our giant binder and make "debtor phone calls". It was a huge binder filled with customers who owed us money, and it included information for customers that owed us for years. When you went into the location to pay off your loan, was the store busy or was the teller preoccupied in any way? I'm thinking if the teller was busy, he may have just taken your payment, and never entered it into the system. Or he may have applied it to someone else's account, or even worse, just pocketed the money and did nothing at all. Trust me, that company has seen quite a few thieves and two of them worked at my store. I worked for the Checksmart in Greenacres on Lake Worth Rd. and the district manager at the time was Kyle Hanson. If he is still around, try to contact him, because his best friend's dad is the owner of Checksmart.
