i am reading some pretty negative stuff here about chessler books, and michael chessler, and i have just got put my personal experience out there.

michael chessler has spent probably ten to fifteen hours on the phone with me over the last six years, helping me to ferret out old and new guidebooks and climbing history/anecdote collections.  for all of his help, he has made a paltry couple of hundred dollars on my sparse purchases.  he may come off as brusque at times, but these occasions are immediately juxtaposed by his informative enthusiasm, and zeal for his field.  michael chessler does not know me from adam, but has never hesitated to be helpful, and when he has not had time to talk, he has stated so flatly, and asked that i call back at another time.

i have never had the remotest trouble with a chessler order, stretching back to the multiple catalog days of the late eighties, long before i ever spoke to anyone from chessler on the phone.

i placed my first online order with chessler last friday.  when i had not received any sort of e-mail confirmation by tuesday morning, i began to get concerned- "wow, have things slipped in the last year or two?  is the online thing messing up service?"

i opened my front door, and my three guidebooks were sitting there, just as i had requested, inside the storm door.  get it?  that's one and a half business days!

i have no doubt that were i ever to have a problem with an order, it would be resolved in a timely fashion.

don't be put off by the negative reports, chessler is definitely top shelf.

I'm sorry some of you have had a bad experience with Chessler. That has NOT been my experience, however. I too wanted some info before investing over $100 in a book advertised as signed by Edmund Hillary. Michael Chessler responded very promptly and was not at all rude or condescending. He fully addressed my inquiry and satisfied me that he is a legitimate book vendor. AJ Rodenberg
P.S. I have been the Sheriff of my county for the past 12 years and before that was a prosecuting attorney for 10 years. This experience has given me the skills and eye to spot a fraud. I do NOT believe Michael Chessler qualifies as one.

I think it is good that websites like this exist to make people aware of the many scams that exist on the Internet. However, it also gives people a place to permanently besmirch somebody else's reputation, and since we all believe everything that is written on the internet, the tendency is to believe what we read.

I have no doubt that the person who wrote this complaint had an unhappy experience with us. That unfortunately is sometimes a natural consequence of buying by mail... or even in a store. We have been selling mountaineering books by mail since 1984, and have sold perhaps a million books to hundreds of thousands of individuals all over the world.

I am intensely aware that we make mistakes, ship the wrong item, run out of books, ship to the wrong address, have our parcels delayed in the mail, etc etc. This occurs with all mail order sellers, and I suspect we are better than most, and worse than some. I do know that our refunds have always run under 2%, and I heard once that LL Bean is closer to 6%, but of course they sell clothing which has a high return rate.

We take pride in providing the best selection of new, used, rare and collectible mountaineering books IN THE WORLD, and have been in that position for over a decade before the internet was invented. If you search our company name, Chessler Books on google, and on climbing chat lines, you will quickly see that we are highly regarded by the entire mountaineering community, plus the mountaineering book readers of the world, and that although we make mistakes (as we employ only human beings) we also have many customers who buy regularly from us, some every month, and we still have customers who have been with us for one or two decades.

By the way, the name of the person who left this complaint is false. We have no customers in Jalisco, or with his first name.
