The fan on my Dell Inspiron laptop fan was noisy and a real annoyance, even after replacing the old fan with new.  I found this neat fan control program by Christian Diefer which allows you to set the temperatures that turn the fan off and on. More importantly it matches the CPU speed to the computing load so no more heat is generated than necessary, thereby greatly reducing the amount of time the fan needs to run.

All was well for some months, until, one day my anti-virus/ intenet security system detected that this I8kfanGUI31.exe program had attempted to load a root kit.  The attempt was nipped in the bud but in the process of the anti-virus attempting to clean it up, some key operating system modules got corrupted, destroying the operating system.  It was not worth trying to fix, so the laptop ended up a total loss.

It is a pity Mr. Diefer did not care to play it straight as I would happily have paid real money for this program.  Unfortunately his dishonesty resulted in a lose-lose for everybody.
