I am insured with Cigna through my employer. I pay for myself, my husband and my 22 year old college Senior. Every Fall, they request a copy of my child's class schedule - to prove that she is still in school. Fair enough.

Every year it is faxed or mailed in. As it was this year. But this year it was apparently "not received." (And only this year - hmmm - what a creative way on their part to cut down on expenditures in a tight financial market - very creative cost savings!)

So they simply CANCELLED coverage on my child. At the same time, I WAS STILL PAYING FOR HER COVERAGE!!!! (So, give us your money anyway - as what - a donation???)

Our dentist had to inform me that our child was not covered...THEY DIDN'T EVEN SEND ME A LETTER!!! (Because then I might reinstate her faster, cutting into their cost savings.)

When I spoke to them about it - the first CSR - she was actually nice and helpful. Must have been a Mother.

But when I called back and asked that they inform the Dentist that our child was being reinstated, I got the "let's think up all of the possible ways to say NO approach".

My child lives in Philadelphia - beautiful, but not the safest city in the World. When I asked "Is my child covered if she's in an accident or gunned down tonight?" - I was actually being serious. This is the actual response that I got.

"Oh, that's nice!" (This is coming from an insurance company. What - don't they deal with bad stuff every day? Are gunshots NOT covered???)

Then I got lectured that if I got upset with her, she would not help me!!!

SO - here is where I am. Buyer beware. If your company gives you other companies to choose from, DO NOT CHOOSE CIGNA!!!! Last year, my kid fell up some stairs and most of it ended up NOT being covered. I have asked Cigna TWICE to mail me a statement of what was paid. I've never received it. BOTH requests went missing. - Come on - that's not a coincidence. They just don't want to reimburse me the $850 I spent!!!

It's almost as if they make the rules up as they go in order to save money!!!

They are not on your side - they don't have your back - they simply don't care. They just want your money. And they don't care if your child is not covered.

Luckily, I have proof that I paid and I have spoken to some others in the same boat. We are probably going to end up filing a class action suit. Because if we don't, they will just keep doing it to other people's children.

Do you know how insurance works?

You state you pay CIGNA, wrong. if you are through an employer group you pay your employer for your coverage, the contract is between your employer and cigna you are simply reimbursing your employer for the portion of the insurance they already paid for you. Also CIGNA's earnings were nothing to laugh at so I doubt very highly the extra fifty bucks you pay is going to break the bank for them.
