On May 25, 2008, I purchased a laptop, Quick Start, and a laptop case from Circuit City. As they were waiting for someone to do the Quick Start, I changed my mind. I got a "refund". Of course, I had written a check, so I knew they would have to wait until my check cleared the bank before they could do a refund.

My check cleared my bank on May 29, 2008.

On June 2, 2008, I called their customer service line (800-THE-CITY), and talked with 2 VERY rude representatives. They told me I had to wait 7 to 14 BUSINESS days after my check cleared before they would send me a refund. (And they only start the process if you call and set up a claim, even though the refund receipt says they will mail a check to you.)

I went to the store, the manager called their corporate offices and left a message for someone. The next day I called another manager at that store. He called and found out that they have my check set to mail on June 10, 2008. He also gave me a phone number to call (800-THE-CITY) to speak with someone who handles disputes. Well, guess what! It is the same rude customer service representative that I spoke with yesterday!!!

I asked if they could expedite my check. No, they don't do that. They simply hold onto the money so they can earn more interest, I guess. Anyway, I asked for an email address for someone in the department that handles refunds. She told me to go to www.circuitcity.com. I did. There is no email for a complaint department or a refund department.

Anyway, I picked an email and informed them that I would Tell everyone I know how they have treated me, and ask that everyone tell everyone they know.

This is no way to treat a customer. They do not deserve any of your business.

When you pay by check this is a standard refund procedure. Not only for Circuit City but other major stores also. With the amount of fraud, and the extent that people will go to to defraud stores, they have had to go to this process. I am not saying that you are comitting fraud, just that this policy was put in place because of this.

If you wanted the possibility of a refund you should have used your Debit Card, it is tied to your checking account. When you use this to pay, you could have had it refunded back to your account without the 10-14 day wait. If your card has a daily limit you can often call your bank and have them temporarily remove that limit so the debit would go through.
