The Citi PremierPass Elite promises that they will provide a free companion ticket for every domestic ticket purchase over $299. What they don't tell you is that you will have to go through their travel agency to book. When you do, this travel agency will charge so much more for the original ticket, you will lose money rather than save it.

Here's my example: the travel agency wants to charge me $300 more than the ticket costs on United's website and $400 more than it would cost on Orbitz. Therefore, I can pay $679 to Citi or I can basically pay $600 for two $300 tickets on Orbitz.

Citi with "Free Companion" = $679
The same two tickets on United = $672
The same two tickets on Orbitz = $600

Because the Citi PremierPass has a $75 a year fee, I find this unacceptable. I paid for this benefit, and it does not exist.
