Purchased 396 BBC Mark V engine by clewwho40 Shaw City Engines on EBAY. Engine purchased from and delivered by clewwho40 in early 2016. Installed engine 3 months later and found incorrect head gaskets had been installed by clewwho40 which were Gen IV head gaskets that were used on 2 piece rear main blocks that have series cooling that flows through the block and enters head at back of the block unlike GEN V and VI that use parallel cooling that has coolant holes in the head the full length and allows cascading cooling the entire length of the head. The incorrect head gaskets allowed all coolant flow to bypass the block and heads and flow directly to the radiator causing extreme overheating.

Installed correct head gasket that fixed the overheating problem and was able to run engine for break in only to find oil pressure dropped to 0 once engine was at operating temps now that it could be run more than a few minutes.  Pulled engine and found oil clearance on mains exceeding .010”. Measured line bore and found line bore was oversized .008”.   Took block to local machine shop and they installed new main caps and line bored engine correctly.

Took crank, rods and pistons along with flywheel and balancer to local machine shop as well to verify balance as the engine had a very bad vibration during break-in.   The crank was found to be 320 grams off on the flywheel side. The machine shop contacted SCAT and they verified the crank was internal balance from the factory. Clewwho40 drilled the crank front and back to attempt to make it external balance to allow gen IV flywheel  and balancer use. The machine shop removed 320grams from the flywheel  and got the assembly to balance.

After all of this I reassembled the engine and installed. I upgraded the valve springs and rockers and installed a cloyes timing chain shortened to accommodate the line bore. Engine runs good now and no more issues.
