Closet World is a company that is almost too bad to be true.

Their disregard for their customers is so complete that I'm not even upset anymore by my experience -- just astonished that the company remains in business.

Rather than detail every broken promise, missed appointment, unreturned phone call, ignored complaint or wasted day off work for workmen who never showed, I'll simply summarize the most egregious problems below.

But if you read no further, please take away this message: DO NOT EMPLOY THIS COMPANY FOR ANY PROJECT.

Here goes:

Project to redo three closets is promised to take one day. The installer brings insufficient material to complete the project -- but since the designer screwed up the measurements, the job could not have been completed anyway.

They promise to return the following work day to complete the job. They don't.

We make many unreturned phone calls and spend hours on hold before we get a new completion date -- in one week. But they don't show up.

They re-re-schedule, never having apologized for the earlier screwups. A week later, the crew shows up four hours late. They complete one of the two remaining closets, but screw up installation on the third, which has been mismeasured yet again.

Through all of this, no employee or manager would take any responsibility for actually honoring their commitments or repeated promises. They just made excuses and said, "these things happen," all the while assuring us they would not happen again. They never apologized -- for our having to take days off work for no-show appointments, for failing to return calls, for keeping us on hold for hours, for anything.

So when they promised to call us the following work day to set up a new appointment to finish the work on the remaining, screwed-up closet, we decided we would just wait for that call. We were done calling them.

That was three months ago.

They never called.

So we finally turned to someone reputable to fix the remaining closet instead.

In retrospect, we should have known better. There are dozens of horror stories about this company online and the company has an "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau.

I saw that a company spokesman said online somewhere that "only 2 percent of their clients" have problems as numerous and severe as mine were. He suggests that having 1 out of every 50 clients feeling so bitter, frustrated and dissatisfied that they post lengthy complaints online is actually pretty good.

Look, all companies make mistakes, but good companies don't keep repeating them. And good companies also go out of their way to satisfy clients when things go wrong.

Closet World never even tried.

(P.S. I didn't even go into the shoddy quality fo the work they did do, but there are photos online at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/avoidclosetworld/)

I am the person referred to in the posting on this page.

Since these complaints were posted on this web site, numerous officials at Closet World, Inc. have made repeated attempts to resolve the initial issues I listed in the posted complaints.

The Closet World officials treated me fairly in the course of resolving issues I previously had with the company. They were courteous, diligent, and professional. They repeatedly apologized for any inconvenience I may have endured, and made extraordinary efforts to guarantee my ultimate satisfaction.

I also note that the California State Licensing Board never suspended Closet World's license to operate in the State of California.

Thank you for an opportunity to set the record straight.

State officials give Closet World *one last chance* -- and an $80,000 fine

#8Author of original report

Sat, October 21, 2006

Concluding a lengthy investigation of Closet World for fraud, false advertising and other violations of California law, state officials have fined the company $80,000 and sentenced it to two years probation.

According to an Oct. 19, 2006, article in the Whittier Daily News, officials for the California Contractors State License Board also authorized the revocation of Closet World's license -- but suspended that action so long as the company abides by the terms of its probation, which includes strictly obeying all laws.

So, for now, Closet World remains in business...

State officials are shutting down Closet World!

#8Author of original report

Fri, July 07, 2006

***California state officials have initiated procedings to revoke Closet World's License and shut down the company.***

According to a CSLB representative who called me on July 7, 2006, recent investigations of Closet World's conduct have prompted the move to terminate the company's license, immediately.

"Tell your family, your friends and your neighborstheir license will be revoked," the CSLB official said. "The company is fighting this and they are entitled to due process, but they were already on probation for serious violations of state law, so it's essentially over... This [company] has got to go."

Almost four months ago, Closet World promised to call to schedule an appointment to fix all the problems with their workmanship. They never called.

Instead, this week they charged our credit card $1,000 for work they never performed.

We are disputing the charge as and are pursuing legal action against the company for fraud and breach of contract.
