Cohen & Slamowitz recently ( April 2013) had a judgment execution to garnish my wages from a judgement dated back in April of 2005,  do not state who the original debtor is or original debt amount, they are saying on the judgment from 2005, that the debt amount was $16,938.47, but that the balance due with interest is $30,424.14. I did at one time have a credit card in approximately 2000, but no way was the credit limit close to that. Unfortunately had been going through a bad time and now in the process of being laid off in the next couple weeks. Can they do this aftre this long? They have been taking a good portion of my pay for the past few months, but all this time I have been wondering if they could do thisd after 8 years.

Even though there is a time limitation on judegment, your time (8 years) is still within the time length in many states after renewal (5 years and renew for 5 more years). However, you need to find out what the judgment on you. Maybe you could contact the court in which you were supposed to be given the judgment. Have you filed for bankruptcy? If so, what chapter did you file on (7 or 11)? Is all debts discharged or only some of them? There are many possibilities and the responsibility is on you to prove that you do not owe them.
