I had as Providian credit card years ago, and now I know better. When I was unable to keep up with the payments, collection calls were almost every day. After a few years my finances improved and I wanted to buy a house, so I looked into cleaning up my old credit stains. I got a letter one day from Cohen & Slamowitz stating there was a default judgement and that I owed $6,648.17. I paid it in July 2005 and received a notice of satisfaction from Cohen & Slamowitz. Unfortunately, it's still on my credit report as late, because they never sent the sat letter to the 3 bureaus. I guess that's my fault I didn't know I had to do that myself.

Later I found out the amount past due on the Providian card was only $2990 with interest. The account was charged off by Providian and sold to Metro Portfolios, a collections company owned by David Cohen of Cohen & Slamowitz. Metro Portfolios added charges including interest and costs after the charge off date. Is that legal?
