Complaint Review: Colonial Van Lines Relocation

Colonial Van Lines Relocation pick up was 3.5 days late, delivery is 6 days late and counting! Indianapolis, Indiana

I signed a contract with Colonial Van Lines on 10/8 for them to move me from Vermont to Arizona and paid them the deposit they requested.  They were scheduled to show up on 10/26, but didn't arrive until 10/29 at 3:15 pm.  This 3.5 day delay meant that I spent the first 3 days of my cross country tip driving through Hurricane Sandy.   I also lost 3 days of self-employment income.

Because of the delay in pickup, Colonial Van Lines told me that they would be unable to deliver in Tucson between Nov 1-6 as scheduled, but would deliver this past weekend, between Nov 9-11.  They didn't show!  I've now spent 6 nights on an air mattress on an empty house.

Of greatest frustration is the fact that Colonial Van Lines had been consistently unable to contact Ocean Moving, their agent, to provide accurate pick up dates and times.  In Vermont, I waited home all day on 10/26 and 10/28 for pickup, not knowing when or if the movers would appear.  In Tucson, I stayed home or very close to the house all weekend, thinking that the movers would arrive and that I needed to be available to let them in.

Also, Colonial Van Lines is now asking that I contact Ocean Moving directly for arrival times.  This might have worked, but Ocean Moving isn't picking up their phone, and their Dispatch and Customer Service voice mail accounts are full.

I've been waiting (again) all morning for Colonial Van Lines to return my call from Friday to provide a new estimate.

Don't use Colonial Van Lines of Indianapolis.

Followup:  Colonial Van Lines agent, MCI, delivered on 11/18, not on the 11/16 estimated delivery date on Colonial Van Lines rebuttal.  This is 12 days later than the date on my contract with Colonial Van Lines.

Jorana, we have reviewed your online submission and located your account. We regret we were unable to execute your relocation within your requested moving dates and to hear of your displeasure in the interaction between you and our company.

The moving industry is one of a dynamic and unpredictable nature. Our contracts are drafted with this in mind as stated in the Terms & Conditions included in the documentation you received during your booking process. We make every effort in performing our customers' moves within the estimated moving dates as contracted and try to accommodate our customers despite circumstances that occur beyond our control but unfortunately at times our attempts prove failure.

Our records indicate that on the final day of your load date (10/26/2012), the agent that was assigned to perform your relocation was no longer able to do so, hence your belongings being loaded later than anticipated. The same does apply in regards to delivery. Your account states that, as of 11/13/2012, your estimated delivery date is for 11/16/2012. We strongly advices our customers in the documentation we provide upon booking that unforeseen events that are beyond our control do occur and this is mainly the reason why the dates provided are estimated rather than guaranteed.

Colonial Van Lines Relocation Division apologizes for any losses and inconveniences caused throughout your moving process. It was always in our intention to provide you with exceptional services and a smooth transition to your new location. Please fee free to contact our office at 1-800-853-0039 if you have an further questions in regards to the delivery of your belongings or this response.

Sincerely,
Colonial Van Lines Relocation Division
