I recieved a call 2 years ago, and was offered a so-called gread deal on my choice of three magazines. Like a sucker, I decided to hear what the man on the other end of the line had to say and I agreed to the trial.

He told me I had the option of within like thirty days, I could cancel my subscription. I could accomplish this just by calling the "1-800" number provided. The guy kept me on the phone almost an hour and a half, telling me about the offers and the kind of magazines I could subsribe to. He then took my credit card number and rattled off the privacy stuff and the conditions of the deal.

I lost my only employment, as well as my half of the support for my 2 roommates and 3 little kids. After I lost my job, I decided to call and cancel my subscription and the gentleman I talked to gave me a really hard time. He wanted to know why I wanted to cancel and if I wanted to consider a slightly cheaper package. The man wouldn't listen to reason and eventually, after being put on hold for the second time, I had to hang up. I got no cooperation! I had to close my bank account and denied them access to anymore money.

Several weeks and phone calls later, I talked to another representative from the Community Reading Club and I was informed that I had a small balance of over 100 dollars (I also received a bill). I told the man that I had called before and tried to cancel before I was billed and then he preceded to tell me I needed to write a formal letter to cancel my account. Neither of the other two representatives gave me any such information or obviously I would have sent a strongly-worded letter cancelling my account.

Two years later, I have a smudge on my credit report from them and I don't see that I should pay them when they lied to me and didn't cooperate fully.
