BEWARE OF THEFT AT THE CONSECO INSURANCE COMPANY

In March 1993, I purchased a policy from Capital American. They began taking my premiums automatic withdrawl from my bank account. The policy was then purchased by Conseco Insurance.

After being laid off from my job, I now have time to make sure all of my records are in order. I realized I do not have a policy from Conseco Insurance, only the original policy from Capital American. They changed the policy number sometime during that change and at first could not even find my policy. After a few days, they did find it and called me & gave me the new # . Conseco will not send a policy unless I pay $25. They sent me a "policy confirmation" with incorrect dates.

I brough this to their attention and now they are telling me my policy started in 1995 although I provided them with a copy of the origial policy. Today I rec'd a letter stating they were done researching and would do nothing else to correct this. They sent me documents that someone changed the dates by my signature. The "FRAUD" word come to me as I review these papers. Phone calls to this company is worthless, their representatives are rude and have canned responses only.

In 1995, I changed bank accounts and the premiums were again taken automatic withdrawl from my bank. Keep in mind, my original policy date is
1993.

I am sure they know that banks are required to keep microfilm copies of transations for 7 years. I am sure they know the average consumer does not keep records from 1993. I am sure they know they are going to steal my premiums from 1993 to 1995. (this money probably went to some manager as a bonus, hidden from the IRS and will never be found)

If you have money you want stolen, deal with Conseco Health Insurance, otherwise I highly recommend any other insurance company.

I am still trying to resolve this issue. If anyone out there has recommendations, PLEASE let me know.

I hear this often, and here is what most likely happened

First of all, you will not have a policy from Conseco. The insurance laws in all 50 states mandate a policy is a contract and may not be changed. When Conseco bought Capital American in 1997, you were sent a letter that stated something like this:

From this date forward the name of the Company shall be known as Conseco Health Insurance Company. All other provisions of your policy remain unchanged.

I run into customers who make statements similar to yours. one of two things have happened:

1 - they missed payments (due to changing a bank account, insufficient funds, or similar situation), and the company reinstates them which may change your policy start date, or

2 - an agent upgraded their policy (again, in your situation this would have been a CAPITOL AMERICAN agent, NOT a Conseco agent), and that is how you get a new policy number. Conseco does not randomly change ANYBODY'S policy number.

I'm not licensed or appointed in Utah, so I can't help you there. Just remember, Conseco didn't even OWN CapAmerican during the dates you are referring to. Yes, they DO have a $25 policy replacement fee. Many companies charge $75-$100!

HTH,
Steve
