I used the "free" credit check advertised on consumerinfo.com. I specifically did NOT request the credit score which was listed as a pay service and I did not agree to a yearly subscription to the "credit monitoring" service.

Nevertheless, consumerinfo.com charged my credit card $79.95 a few weeks later. I prompty called the number associated with the charge: (877)513-4175. Their mode of operation became apparent when the representative asked: "Did you cancel your membership?"... Which means: "If you access our FREE service, you are automatically enrolled in a yearly subscription (who knows of what...) with a hefty fee.

Also, we don't let you know about it, you have to discover it yourself in your credit card bill, bank records etc. The burden of disassociation with the service lies with YOU, the consumer. If 1/3 of each of our victims is oblivious to the charge, we're set!"

This company is one of a large number of companies that deceitfully enroll people in their "services" and make money from their victims' oversight. An $80 charge barely makes a dent in my monthly credit card bill, so if I hadn't checked each charge I could have easily missed the fraudelunt charge.

The consumerinfo.com representative promised a "full refund" within 4-5 business days, which I will closely monitor.
