A week or two before Thanksgiving I bought a box of Krusteaz Key Lime Bars ($2.59). Decided to make it on New Year's Day and had to make a special trip to the store to get the heavy cream ($4.59) needed to make the Key Lime Pie recipe on the back of the box. The key lime filling did not disolve in the cream so it was very gritty and had a horrible taste. We were afraid to eat it, so the whole thing went into the trash.

On Monday, Jan 4 I called the 800 number on the box to tell them what happened. They asked for the embossed code on the box top and then told me the product was from 2005. I was not able to tell them where it was purchased since I had shopped in 3 different stores in the week leading up the the holdiay and only save receipts until the end of the month. She said they are not responsible for my buying and using old product. I disagree!  It was their decision to not use an open coded use by date on the box; I had no way of knowing it was old. The person I talked with said she would send me a form with how to read their codes. But that hardly helps after the fact & so far I have not gotten it. She also said that sometime this year they are planning to put a use by date on the box. That may be an admission that they know that what they have been doing is unfair to consumers.

I filed a report with the state Atty Gen/Consumer Protection requesting them to refund the cost of the product, the cost of the cream purchased to prepare the product, postage for mailing, and a small fee to cover the cost of going to the store, using propane to cook the crust, and the time I wasted making a pie that was garbage. Total of $10.48

They ignored the PA inquiry so PA reffered it to their home state. They refused to provide a refund. I want people to be warned that their product goes bad and the average consumer cant read their date code and wont know if they are buying old or current product.

They said the offered me some cents off coupons. Well, they did offer; but they never arrived.
