Complaint Review: Corizon Prison Health Services

Corizon, formally Prison Health Services provides medical/mental health services at Riker's Island Prison. YOU DON'T WANT TO WORK AT THIS PLACE. You will be over worked and underpaid. Supervisors couldn't care less  about you. They don't even care if you take your half hour off to eat. Yeh.... my supervisor couldn't care less if I starved. A lot of politics and back stabbing. You will feel very uncomfortable the moment you walk in there, not because it is a prison, but because the supervisors are unpleasant, play head games, and like to see their employees squirm. Very high turn over. Nobody lasts very long because of the stress, low pay, sociopathic supervisors and back stabbing fellow employees. Maybe if I had been placed in another building my experience would have been better.
    My former supervisor, the mental health unit chief of George Matchon Detention center,  initially appeared like a reasonable human being. Then I realized quickly I had a cold blooded angry sociopath on my hands. I would come in and instead of staying good afternoon he would say, "Don't look so guilty". He would also make you uncomfortable by saying, " I might come back later tonight". He was a SADIST who likes to play with people's heads, put them down and make them uncomfortable. This affected my ability to concentrate on my work, and my desire to stay at the position. I should have asked for a transfer to another building, but I don't think they would accomodate me. The human resources couldn't even figure out how to send me my parking pass. Totally inept.
    Another common problem was that everyone I worked with was being shorted on their checks. I spoke to a number of fellow employees who were still waiting for money that was owed them for months. The payroll person didn't care if people were paid or not. A fellow employee told me he though the person got a kickback from the company for shorting people. People were shorted on their hours, vacation pay and good luck getting your money. I was also inappropriately touched by my supervisor, an experience I have never had before. Actually most supervisors I have had have been decent and supportive people. So this kind of treatment was very knew to me.
   I couldn't take this environment and left. The stress level was palpable.  I spoke to an attorney and was told that at the least I could have filed a class action suit because of the ineptness of payroll. I was also given a right to sue letter and could of filed an action against my supervisor because he created a hostile work environment. I did file a complaint with the NYState commission on civil rights claiming I was harassed because of a disability. I do get a little anxious when I am around a lot of people and being surrounded by criminals and sociopathic supervisors only made that worse. I believe the supervisor was removed from his position and is no longer with the company. Many complaints had been made against him, probably to his immediate supervisor, but I was the first person to file a complaint outside of the company. He was moved behind the scenes and then ultimately left. He was an angry, cruel cold blooded sociopath and had no business supervising people. I hold the company and whoever hired him responsible for putting him in that position. I guess I was not lucky. If I had been placed in another building my experience would have been more pleasant and probably could have worked there for a long time.
   I was given a right to sue letter, but did not want to blow the money to file an actual case against the company. I was told I could have been compensated for lost pay, and emotional suffering. This job loss also cost me a serious relationship at the same time. The mental health unit chief, who was extremely Mean , thought he had an easy mark. Unfortunately, I come from a wealthy and connected family and do the money, contacts and resources to ruin his career. Maybe I have. I would advise not working at this place. Nobody stays very long because obviously it is an unpleasant place to work. The pay is very low. They over work you and the stress level is very high. Work anywhere but this place. Some people there were supportive, but overall it is rife with backstabbers and the company sees you as expendable. Go to Career Builder and you will always see them advertizing to fill positions. Why? Because nobody stays there very long. If you are just out of school and young and can tolerate the conditions.....maybe it's something to look into. If you are older, you are not going to want to deal with all the nonsense from the inmates, staff, supervisors etc. The inmates unfortunately were nicer than the staff! I had a night supervisor who wanted me to rip the phone out of the wall so I could talk to a spanish interpreter. Crazy..... I think these mental health supervisors were a little crazy when they started, and the stressful environment of a prison only makes it worse over time. Don't work here! You will be left very angry and let down!
