My brother was recently arrested and immediately began calling approximately 5 family members in hopes that someone would bail him out. In the course of 3 days he attempted to call me 20 times. I refused the charges but while I was at work my daughter accepted one call, unaware of my wishes. I'm not even sure yet what the charge will be for that one call. The following day I received a call from Correctional Billing Services, which I did not answer. They left a message on my machine stating...since I had recently accepted a collect call from a correctional facility, I would now be charged a recurring monthly fee. I called the number they left. I was upset. What I found out was even more aggravating. Because I had accepted one call...this company assumes that I will keep accepting the calls and charge me $2.49 per month for as long as he remains in that facility. This charge is in addition to the price of the call itself. How in the world can that be legal? I asked them to block all calls from that facilty and I hope that will be the end of it, but I'm not too sure it will be.
