I recently purchased a used car from a dealer who ripped me off as well. The trans was slipping a bit when I would stop and accelerate and was covered under Eagle Warranty. I brought my car to Cottmans for repair because I thought they were reputable. I knew that my warranty would cover in full a used transmission so that I wouldnt have to pay out of pocket.

The next day Cottman told me that they were going to take my trans out to see what the problem with it was. I said ok. I said that the repair should be covered by my Warranty and Ernie, the Cottman representative agreed.

I got a call back from Ernie saying that the trans was pretty much shot and I needed a re-built trans put in and my Warranty would cover about $1000 worth of repairs and that I would have to pay $1200. I told Ernie that I didnt want or need a rebuilt trans and that I wanted a used one so that I wouldnt have out of pocket expenses, and that I didnt have $1200. Ernie said he wouldnt do that because used trans arent any good and my car would only work for about a week with a used trans because they come from junk yards.

I then told Ernie to put my car back together and I will take the car to my own private mechanic to fix the trans and Ernie said fine but that there would be a $500 charge to put my car back together. No one ever told me that or had me sign anything to that effect. Ernie also stated that by putting the broken trans back in my car, that my car would most probably not even be driveable off their lot and would have to be towed!!

I was shocked and appalled because my car was in perfect working condition when I drove it in, the trans only slipped a tiny bit while driving it and now I was being told that it would no longer be in a driveable condition. Feeling trapped I told them to put in the re-built transmission. So now I am out $1000 on a repair that should have been free. Never again will I trust a Cottman Transmission or any affiliate thereof and am trying to pursue legal measures to re-coup my money

I Think Dan from Englishtown must be confusing us with the Cottman that was in Morganville a few years ago. From the description of the problem he was experiencing ,provided the chevy he was driving was a front wheel drive 3 speed automatic,I know that we would have suggested changing the torque converter lockup switch ,not calling for a rebuild.

Given the limited information I can only assume that this was the case ,that particular transmission has a common problem with that switch which causes the engine to stall when hot after stopping .We have never suggested an overhaul for that problem and have had many satisfied customers when we have changed the switch.

I would like to have more information about this incident so I can answer more specifically.

I used Cottman in Freehold a couple of years ago. My car would stall everytime I stopped the car. They checked out the car at Cottman (Freehold) and suggested a rebuilt. I went on the Internet and seached with my symptoms. A mechanic from a Chevy dealship wrote that what was needed was a electronic part which I bought from the local dealer for $100. I brought the e-mail and part to Cottman and the owner was very surprised. The Cottman mechanic took me on the side and said that was great what I did. The repair cost me 150 and the car ran great.. But I will NEVER trust them again as the owner was very unprofessional and had an attitude.

truth of the matter the warranty provider collected cash for the extended warranty from the consumer, probably in fine print they would only authorize a used part or repairs within that price range. the cottman rep should have examined your paper work prior to obligating himself to repairs, (as it looks like it is not his policy to install used transmissions) "he should have advised you he would not install a used part prior to getting your authorization to inspect your trans". yes that is policy with extended warranty co, you have to autorize the inspection. i would contact that warranty company and advise them that cottman transmissions will not install used transmissions so if the home office at cottman has that warranty company as a national account, they should terminate there account with corprate. if they are a national account with corp cottman than ask the warranty co for there agreement plans with cottman centers (maybe installing used trans are ok in the agreement with corp) i have one warranty account who does prefer used transmissions, so if the consumer does not want to spend the "slight diffrence in price", i require the warranty company to locate and ship a used unit to me, which they do, if it does not work, i get paid again by the warranty company. generally the customer elects to pay the 300-500 dollar diffrence for a rebuilt unit.

GERI~~~~It sure looks like what you wanted you weren't willin to do the homework~~~As you understand the used car warranty that you purchased only gives you the option of a "used part with comparable mileage" prior to bringing the car in "you" should of spent the hours on the phone to locate a trans for your car.~~~~~~The shop has no responsibility except for proper installation of the trans~~~~the Junk Yard has the responsibility of the part only~~The warranty company has the responsibility of the repairs per the terms of the contract~~~~~~so geri~~~~All this was your decision~~~~~Why are you complaining?????????
