We cancelled our homeowners insurance with AMICA after their premium went up almost 50% (without having made any claim...).

Country faxed us the application forms which were filled out handwritten by the agent. It was almost not possible to read what he had entered. He had changed the $ 1,000 deductible (what we told him over the phone) to a $ 5,000 !!! deductible, when we called him he said "I understood $ 5,000 and not $ 1,000" Maybe the next step would be to come up with a 100% deductible....

So we changed his handwritten numbers and faxed them back in may 2004. we made several phone calls asking country why we were not receiving anything. the answer (almost 2 months after having submitted the application) was: "our underwriters are very busy..." On July 27, 2004 we decided to cancel our application and submitted a cancellation note by certified mail. Country received it on August, 09, 2004 at 6:38 am. On August, 10, 2004 they charged our escrow account without ever informing us. we found out about this in november 2004 after our mortgage company send us an escrow shortage note.

These are modern thieves who don't use guns and pistols but dubious business methods. Consumer beware !
