Like others on this site, my husband and I received a letter from Countrywide Mortgage this week announcing that a former employee may have sold all of our personal information to the highest bidder and that they "deeply regret" any inconvenience or concern it may have caused us. Any inconvenience or concern this may have caused us!? Having all of our private, personal, and confidential information being used by identity thieves is more than just an "inconvenience" or "concern."

The letter goes on to say that they will make it up to us by offering a free two-year membership in Triple Advantage Credit Monitoring so that we can see first hand just how many ways our information is being used to perpetuate fraud against us. Has anyone seen the 1,500 + reports filed on this site that concern CIC Triple Advantage Credit Monitoring? Combined with Countrywide Mortgage, it's like a ripoff within a ripoff.

My husband and I are very cautious by nature. We shred sensitive information, never give out PIN numbers or important passwords. We don't give out our SS# or driver's license numbers to just anyone and we take our mail to the post office. So while we appreciate the handy little information sheet on how to avoid being a victim of identity theft that Countrywide included with their letter advising us that we may have already been compromised, it's likely that it's too late - and it's all their fault.
