Craigthecat; Gutenburgman; Steve Tannenbaum Lied to, and lied about, by e-bay seller. Sewing machine vendor blames buyer when he fails to complete deal after payment received. Santa Maria California
Craigthecat (AKA Steve Tannenbaum) sells me a sewing machine (nice machine and quick shipping) but overlooks packaging the power cord/foot controller. Over the next seven weeks he fails to communicate in a timely fashion, sends me the wrong cord, then acts as though it is my fault that he can't figure out how to get the right cord to me. He forces me to use PayPal dispute resolution process to get him to respond with the appropriate cord, then lies about every detail of the transaction, both in his emails with me and in the feedback he left for me on e-bay. He even lied in his response to my feedback for him!
After finally completing the deal with a new cord, he blames me for the whole mess (note that he had my money within 24hours of the auction). Read his feedback from others, and also note how many ratings have been mutually withdrawn. He seems to have a bad rap with a number of customers, though not all of them count in his rating scale. He even offered to withdraw the feedback he left me (if I would do the same).
Also note the feedback he leaves. When a deal goes sour, he ALWAYS blames the buyer, uses insulting language, and behaves as though he has been the injured party. Note too, that most everyone he leaves negative feedback for have otherwise stellar feedback from other sellers. Often, his is the ONLY negative feedback those e-bayers have received.
His ads mention the feedback system, and how we all should refer to it and contribute to it to keep the marketplace honest. Unfortunately, from him it seems like BS. He conned me into thinking he would be a fair and competent seller. He turned out to be inept, dishonest, and vindictive.
Look up another buyer's comments about him at -
(((link redacted)))
Also, I have posted the entire communication between us below, with minor editing of headers, etc, to keep it a little more concise. It will take you several minutes to read through it all, but it's interesting if you want to know what he can be like. It also shows the facts about our communication. If you've had dealings with him already, you may find a lot of similarities to your experiences.
This guy probably sends a lot of good stuff out, and has a lot of happy customers. But look at this as a cautionary tale. I have read other people's reports about him that they NEVER got their deal to completion. I'm just a lot more persistent than they are, or I would probably have encountered the same frustration without success.
Buyers beware! Craigthecat can scratch and bite!
Use the power of the feedback system to keep participants honest.

Dear ralanein,
Im so sorry. You used the e-bay link which does save your e-mail as it is
saved under " Message from eBay Member" which is 99% spam mail to sellers.
It's a problem that e-bay and sellers have been working on as I get over
300 e-mails a day. But bottom line is yes you should have received the
controller. It's not often we forget anything as it's all put in a plastic
bag after pictures. I will look for it and get it sent out priority mail
with something extra for your understanding in this. If you would like to
call me direct please do at 805-714-7777. steve t.

I knew from your e-bay ad that you were someone who could be trusted. I
thought this was simply an oversight. You exemplify what a truly free
market can mean for us all.

I spoke with seller by phone, as he requested. He assured me that he had over 1000 cords, that I should not bother to return the old cord he sent, and that he would send me the correct one, if I could send him a photo of the connection on the machine. I told him that I didnt have a good camera, but would try. I sent the photos and a follow-up message below:

At this point it was about 7 weeks and I was completely in the dark about where this transaction was going. I have never had this kind of a problem before. I looked into e-bays complaint forum. As I had paid through PayPal, e-bay directed me to them for resolution. WARNING: E-BAY ALLOWS A 90 DAY WINDOW TO FILE A DISPUTE; BUT PAYPAL ONLY ALLOWS 45 DAYS. I was lucky, and contacted PayPal on the last day I could file a complaint, seen below:
*******************************************************
PayPal complaint filed on February 16,2008
From Buyer: Ralanein on 2/16/2008 04:28 PST
Steve,
1) You did not include a powercord/foot pedal with the sewing machine in the original shipment.
2) After contacting you, you acknowledged the error and quickly sent a cord. However, it is the wrong cord for the machine, and also looks like it's a lot older than the machine.
3) After I contacted you again you asked me to call you to discuss further. During the conversation you said you had over a thousand power cords, and asked me to send a photo of the powercord connector so that you could be sure to send me the right cord. You also apologized for the inconvenience and told me you would send along some "gift" parts in exchange for my good faith.
4) After sending you the photos, I haven't heard more from you. I sent two more email messages over the past week, but still haven't heard from you.
I really don't like the tone this transaction has taken. As you say in your advertisements, E-bay is only as good as the people using it. I have never had to leave negative feedback, which I have attributed to the very public nature of the feedback system, and the inherent good will of this marketplace. If you believe what you write, then please make this transaction come out better by sending me the cord that belongs to the Kenmore sewing machine I bought from you, or at least contacting me to explain what is going on. I'm capable of further patience only if I see you are acting in good faith.

Richard-i have called your house at least 4 times after you sent me the picture! I also e-mailed you 2 times regarding the cord. I still have your cords sitting next to me. I dont know what was stopping you from calling me back but im doing my best and can not keep on calling after 4 times.once again here is my number-805-714-7777. the photo you sent looks like 4 plugs I have because the quality is very poor. If you wish me to just take a educated guess thats fine but I wish to make it right. So you tell me what to do? I can take photos on my end if thats easer for you. But still the phone is the best. So please work with me and lets get this done. steve t. 805-714-7777

Steve,E-mail is the best way to reach me. You have my address. The photos you received were, regrettably, poor quality, but it would seem that you would know which model Kenmore I bought and would be able to keep track of which cord belongs to that model yourself.Nevertheless, I also want to get the deal completed, so look up the model number and see which cord is appropriate. I note that the cord you previously sent me was just a random old cord. I would have expected to receive the cord manufactured with the machine.Richard

Steve,Just called your number. I got a voicemail message saying that the mailbox is full. No way to leave a message.I'll expect to hear from you shortly by email or through Paypal.
From Buyer: Richard Fein on 2/21/2008 06:58 PST
Steve,My next move will be to escalate this dispute within PayPal, and seek a refund and shipping costs back to you. I don't want to do this, as I really want the sewing machine, but it's obviously useless to me without a cord. Additionally, I'll be leaving negative feedback (of course), along with a link to the posting of our communications in the ebay blog. My hope is that you will get the proper cord and controller to me without further delay or prompting from me. BTW - my records show that there were no phone calls nor e-mail messages from you during the time you described [below]. Nor were there any messages for me through ebay. I suggest you re-remember who you might have called during that time.Richard
From Buyer: Richard Fein on 2/22/2008 09:03 PST
Steve,I haven't heard from you, though I see from your recent feedback on e-bay that you are selling items and therefore, presumably, busy online. I can only guess that you have no intention of completing this sale. I have asked Paypal if I can recover both the payment I made to you, as well as the cost of shipping the machine back to you. I await their reply, then will notify you how I am proceeding.Richard
From Seller: Steven Tannenbaum on 2/22/2008 16:22 PST
richard- I dont know what is going on but I send you e-mails to up date you on everything with no responce. Im lost on how to make you happy. I offered to send you pictures of the plugs so you can tell me what you need with no responce on that. I will send what I think is correct but it would be a coin toss. Lets be workable here. Your picture was not able to show me what you needed so I will take pictures of what I have. - You say send me the one that came with the machine. Well we check deliverys before sent and show your cord was in the package. I also explained there is no standard one as it changed month to month some times. Please let me know when I can send a picture so I can send the proper one and send it same day!steve t. 805-714-7777

Steve,I am copying the message I sent to you through your e-bay mailbox below. Apparently, you don't follow that mailbox. I also tried to leave a message for you on your voice mail yesterday and today. It's full, so you need to erase some messages before new ones can be left.
Read below to find out how to get the correct cord to me. The message below was sent to you on 2/21/08 at 10:48 EST. I have not received ANY phone messages from you, and I only have one phone, my mobile, and I check messages several times/day. I will be happy to show you my phone records if you don't believe me. I have also NOT received the email from you as you claim. Feel free to forward those messages to me now. In the meantime, I suggest you figure out how to locate a cord that goes with the Kenmore model mentioned below, as the machine I have now is worthless without it. Or, you can send me the cost, plus tax, for the purchase of a new cord. Your call.Richard

Dear craigthecat,
cc:gutenburgman@aol.com
Dear Steve, Please avoid more hassle by getting the correct cord to me. The model # of the machine YOU SENT ME is 385-15202400. The Kenmore cord can be obtained through Sears for $19.95, or from private sellers for up to $39.95. I think an experienced sewing machine technician such as yourself could have found this out in less time than it took for me to. I await your response. Please also see the PayPal dispute resolution center for further communication from me.

Dear ralanein,
LETS SEE I SENT A CORD AT $5.00 +( $39.00 per your quote) the cord then you say $39.95 + $8.00 shipping - you paid what $55.00 paypal $5.00 and e-bay $7.00 (all apx amount) so that comes to me selling the machine to you at a loss of $10.00, + 2 hours of work, taking pictures, getting the machine ready through service, doing a sew off, packing, computer time for shipping , dsl payment, AOL PAYMENT- BOOMSPEED PAYMENT FOR PICTURE UP LOAD, printer and ink, delivery service payment for p/u weekly, and much more not noted. I think that comes to a loss of somewhere around $190.00++++. I DONT THINK SELLING ON E-BAY IS YOUR THING LOL.... All it would have taken is a little more help but I think I was able to get what was needed OUT TO YOU. IM SURE YOUR GOING TO BE REALLY PLEASED WITH THE GREAT DEAL YOU RECEVED ON THE FINE SEWING MACHINE FOR THE "PRICE PAID". IT SHOULD GIVE MANY YEARS OF SERVICE WITH STANDARD CARE. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE QUICK PAYMENT AND YOUR UNDERSTANDING IN THIS MATTER. BOTTOM LINE IS EVERYTHING HAS BEEN SENT TO GET YOU UP AND RUNNING WITH YOUR KENMORE SEWING MACHINE.THANK YOU AGAIN, STEVE T.

Steve,
I will leave feedback as soon as I give it some thought. Your comments
notwithstanding, if you feel like you are losing money, maybe you
shouldnt be a seller. I found your tone insulting, your communication
skill absent, and you are a liar as well. There never were phone calls
to me. And I'm sure you will not be able to produce copies of the emails
you supposedly sent me. Nor the photos. And I certainly don't see,
though I didn't expect, the "something extra for your patience" that you
promised.
Nevertheless, I have the cord, it works with the machine, and that's all
I wanted in the first place.
I found the website on which your customer [from] Amarillo, TX, described your
trading practices to a "T", at least as far as my contact with you is
concerned. I'm sure that you are capable of better handling of
transactions, as attested to by your feedback, but you really made a
shambles of this one. I will contact Paypal and let them know that I
received the cord, and that the claim can be dropped. LOL.

Subject: Re: Very unsatisfactory dealings
First Richard I asked for your help on this matter which you did with no
pride. All that was needed was a clean photo which you were unable to give me. The
one you sent was as bad as it gets when there are so many that plugs that
look the same. I even said I would send you photos of plugs and just tell me
which one works. That was not something that you wanted to do. What I got was you
wanted me to just keep on sending plugs until the right one was sent. But the
stand I take is the plug was sent with the machine and you over looked it when
unpacking the machine. As a seller IM backed against the wall when you say
you did not get it and have no say as the seller. I cant tell you how many
times I have gotten screwed by buyers making statements that were not true. IM
not saying you were doing that but again I have no say in that situation as a
e-bay seller. So in this first part of my workings in this all that was needed
was a good photo. Next yes it's an insult for you to believe that I should buy
you a $39.95 plug when you paid 55.00 for the machine with a plug sent. You
have not even taken into account I HAVE SENT YOU A REPLACEMENT ASAP REGARDLESS
OF IT BEING RIGHT OR WRONG FOR THE MACHINE!. You also believe that a seller
should be at the beckon call of the buyer when an e-mail is sent. I do my best to
answer each and every Emil as soon as possible. As I have also told you I get
so many e-mails that are spam it would take me all day to open them all. This
is why I said a phone call works best.
Next regarding your statement about this past customer from TX that you
referred to. If anyone is out to lunch she is it. She order parts for a
machine that I did not sell her. The machine she got from me she was very pleased
but she wanted to start doing repair on thrift shop machines she found. After
she found out she ordered the wrong parts which I gave her at over 50% off she
wanted to return them and get a totally different bottom end for her machine. I
said I would replace her order with the new specks at no restocking fee and
the new order at no difference in price. Well she wanted me to pay for shipping
back to me and back out to her. Since this was not excitable to her blackmail
was her answer. I took a stand and I would do the same thing again as I still
feel I was going overboard to please her. I did not want to explain this to
you but it's people like her that make statements that have no truth and then
without knowing the situation you pick it up and make a conclusion like you
did. She also is making statements about my workings that place the idea in
the minds of buyers such as your self that IM out to screw my buyers.
FACTS!! Sewing machines are one of the hardest sells on e-bay. Its a
working machine and not something as simple as a screwdriver. But after selling
over 2,000 machines on e-bay I would have to say my repeat customer base and
comments posted about my machines speak for them self. IF YOU LOOK AT OTHER
SELLERS OF SEWING MACHINES THEY BUY SOMEONE'S JUNK AND RESELL IT TO A NEW BUYER.
If you check out my actions on e-bay I dont think in 7 years I have bid on but
50 items none being sewing machines. In fact other sellers look me up for
parts as I have been told I STOCK MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE US FOR USED SEWING
MACHINE PARTS from the machines I have that can be striped out. In fact here
(at the bottom) is some pictures of over 500 machines I just picked up. This
does not include the many I receive from the store every week.
Last re my correspondence with you. If my typing skills are not the best
or my response working with you was not to your liking I think you should re
look at the hole picture. Regardless of the belief that the cord was sent with
or with out the machine, or a bad picture was given, or my e-mails sent -
phone calls made or anything else, what is the bottom line. I worked with you
through it all to get you what was needed. I never said I would not send you one.
I sent the first one then a 2nd one. I stood by what the customer said he
needed and took the time to make it right! Yes it could have happened a little
faster but some fault is also on your side of the street. to say a very
unsatisfactory dealings was done with me is an unfair statement when placing blame
and believing some scammer from TX to cosign your side and not opening your
eyes to the total picture! The machine was sent the same day as payment and the
cord as soon as possible not knowing if it was the right one. I eating that
expense. I still sent the 2nd cord and crossed my fingers. If you look at the
bottom of the controller I would bet it's a york which makes cords for many
sellers of sewing machines along with several others. I would bet it does not say
Kenmore anywhere on it! And yes I have over 1,000 cords and if I could get
10.00 each I would sell them all right now. I know this is a lot of info but you
can also see it all was important to me.

I left negative feedback on March 4, as I said I would, after waiting to see if he would respond first. Two hours later, he left negative feedback for me, but posted it for the wrong person. I contacted that buyer, and she had a story much like mine (sewing machine came not as described, with missing parts. E-mail messages were not responded to, then several harassing phone calls to her, more deceptions, etc., and no resolution. She referred to him as a lier [sic] SOB.) He finally posted the feedback to me on March 7. You can read it on my feedback profile.

Dear craigthecat,
Craigthecat,
Don't understand your feedback - how did you arrive at the conclusion
that I demanded $375 from you? All I wanted was the cord to make the
sewing machine complete and useable which was not included in the
original shipment. If you have any email from me that supports your
allegation, send it to me now. If you are claiming that you shipped me
two sewing machines, this is clearly a lie. If you are claiming that you
sent me two cords after the original shipment, this is true, because the
first one was the wrong cord. I offered to sent it back to you, but you
insisted that wasn't necessary.
Make yourself clear to me, and the rest of the e-bay community.

Dear Ralanein,
You scammed me and then blackmailed me. Then you write me a
e-mail that you received the 3rd cord and leave me to fight
paypal because you dropped the ball with them same as you did
with me. I sent you a replacement cord (2nd one) same day. You
gave no help then so I did my best. Then i ask for pictures for
the 3rd and you send me cra-. I asked for you help and you did
nothing. Here is the kicker-you insult me with the new found
knoll-age of you telling me about cords and controllers. Best
part is for me to spend what was it $35.00+ something like
10.00 shipping for it. what did you pay for the machine? so i
shipped 3 cords ( you lost one) and I get a neg. comment with a
wast of time with paypal and no help from you. if you wish to
take back the neg. comment as Ii will if you do--- dont e-mail
me again or ask questions like this one !

Craigthecat,
You seem delusional. Why would I lie about a cord? It wasn't there. Once I contacted you about the lack of a cord, you sent one that was old and beat-up, and didn't come close to fitting my machine. And this from a professional who should have known which model of machine he sold me.
Then you begin accusing me of all kinds of communication problems, I send you the info you need to locate the proper cord, and still no contact from you. Finally I go to PayPal to see about refunds, which forces you to send me a cord that works. Seems that strategy paid off, since you sent me the correct cord immediately after the PayPal claim went forward. Now I have the working cord, the working machine, so why would I continue to fight with you through PayPal? I dropped the claim once the cord came to me and I decided not to send the whole thing back to you for refund and buy from someone else. I would have done so, except I would have had to pay shipping to get the machine back to you.
You can't expect positive feedback after all of that - it took me over 7 weeks to get this deal closed, with you incommunicado or hysterical every minute.
Maybe others have had good dealings with you, but this didn't go so well for either of us. As you say, you have your story and I have mine. I'm willing to share the story with anyone who asks. I'll be posting our communication, verbatim, on the web. Google your name to find the site. I'm sure you will only continue to spew innuendo and unsubstantiated statements - like how I scammed you out of a cord, then blackmailed you for . . . I cant even figure out what you think I was blackmailing you for.
You seem to have some significant psychopathology, and it would be best for everyone if you stop pretending you can deal with complicated or unexpected events, and get some help. If not with your personality disorder, at least with your business.
Ralanein.
FYI, I'm a physician in Maine.

These are the links to other angry, ripped-off customers of this e-bay sewing machine seller. If you have your own story, please post a report here and copy the link in your ebay feedback for this seller. It's the only way I have found to make your voice heard.
This came from Robyn, Amarillo TX. Reading this inspired me to write about craigthecat too.

This one is from Larry, Elko, NV. I didn't find it until after I had reported my own tale. Sometimes the searches on this website are not complete, and you should repeat them several times to be sure you find all you're looking for.

Final statement from Craigthecat - not willing/able to rebutt the accusations.

As you can see, his style is to blow you off once he can't be bothered further. I don't believe he has ANY evidence to rebutt the circumstances of my frustration. I'm certain there are many other people who have had similar experiences with craigthecat, but who aren't as persistent as I have been. See the Ripoff Report posted by Robyn for Amarillo, TX, on this site 2 years ago, with her update from last year. (I have asked that it be linked to this report.) Read craigthecat's feedback carefully. Then purchase from him at the risk that if the deal goes sour as a result of his ineptitude, you are certain to be blamed for the problems, may never get what you paid for, will receive negative feedback, and feel victimized by his viciousness.
Final communication with craigthecat below. Note that when I sent him my original request for the cord, it took him something like 7 days to respond, saying that there is so much spam in his email that he has a hard time finding legitimate communication from customers. It only took him a few hours to notice and respond to this final message. Liar!

I believe it is accurate, and represents the entirety of our transaction. If you think otherwise, there is a method for you to respond on the website.
