We used live and work in the Cayman Islands. We rented a property from Chris Sariego, a property owner in Cayman who lives in the Bahamas. When we left the property at 6A Stewart Lane in Snug Harbour, it was not only in pristine condition, we had made several inprovements to it. We naturally asked the landlord, Mr. Sariego, for our security deposit back as is customary and contracually binding under the tenancy agreement. Mr. Sariego refuses to respond to our requests and refuses to return our money. While tenants in Cayman have very limited rights to start with, Mr. Sariego lives in the Bahamas which makes him all the more difficult to hold accontable. And attorney myself, I spoke with our family attrorney in Cayman. He told me we could pursue Mr. Sariego but it would quickly become infeasibly expensive. The legal costs of tracking Mr. Sariego down in the Bahamas and filing suit would quickly exceed the CI $6,000 we are owed. While still working in Cayman, I heard several stories about Mr. Sariego many of which came from those living in the neighbrhood of Snug Harbour. Mr. Sariego is apparently a well-known underhanded landlord and scam artist who has a track record to not returning in tenants' money, taking care of the properties he rents, etc. I suggest anyone reading this report considering renting from Chris Sariego in Cayman be advised against it as surely he has no intention of being a stand-up landlord and handling his affairs, and yours, ethically and appropriately. If I save one family the trouble we have gone through with Mr. Sariego, my goal will have been achieved. Thanks, Tim.
