In 1997, I opened a joint credit card account with my live-in boyfriend. 2 years later, we broke up, but he kept the card and did not keep up the payments. In 2003, Midland Credit sent me a collection letter for $1094.57, which I immediately paid in full. I was sent a paid in full letter that clearly states that the debt originally belonged to Cross Country Bank. Now here I am over 2 years later with an entry on my credit report that still states "Bad Debt/Collection" as the "Current Status" on two of the three credit bureau reports. They got it right with Transunion- they reported "Account sold-Balance 0", but with the other two, every month, they report that it is a current bad debt. I have called Cross Country more times than I know to ask how to resolve this, I have faxed them copies of my receipt, AND I have disputed this with Equifax and Experian so many times that they will no longer let me dispute. It is the only bad mark on my credit reports. I have worked very hard to take my credit score from non-existent to a respectable level in the past 8 years. This has been a hard lesson to learn, and I've learned to take responsiblity and have TAKEN responsibility. So why am I still being wronged month after month after month? When I call Midland, they are rude and say it is not their responsibility to make CCB update my credit report. CCB says that it must be the credit bureaus making the mistake- that all three should be reporting "Account sold- balance 0." The credit bureaus won't even let me dispute anymore because everytime they've called to verify, CCB has verified the information as CORRECT! I just don't know what else to do- other than to wait it out until the collection is over 7 years old.
