In May of 2010 I started to attend CTU online. I stopped going in June of 2011. So therefore I only attended there for 9 months. Not even a year. I got an email notification that my 6 month grace period is almost up and that I would have to start paying back a student loan.

I called the school to get some answers, which was like pulling teeth. I finally got what they called a ledger of the account. On the ledger is showed where I was getting Financial Aid, a Liberty Grant, and a Subsidized and Unsubsidized student loan.

I then called Nelnet where the loan came from and they proceeded to tell me that I owed 14,000!! I was livid. I then called CTU back for answers that I still don't have. I then read over the original paperwork and what I don't understand is that in the first year it stated that  you would accrue 5,550 in the loan.

So to my dismay I'm wondering how in the world did it get to 14,000 in 9 months. I have no idea if nelnet is a federal student loan place or really even what to do at this point. I'm pretty sure this is a ripoff and that they're just out to get money. As of now I'm still doing my research and figure out what to do because this all just happened.

So any advise anyone can give would be great. I've never been in this situation before and I really don't know what to do.

Nelnet is a federal student loan company. It may be best to contact the school to inquire why they had requested the $14,000 to be disbursed to them and if they are able to return any of the unused portion of your disbursement.

Once this is returned, it will update your balance at Nelnet to the appropriate amount that you are required to repay. If the school is not willing to return the funds, then you would be required to pay the entire loan remaining per the promissory note. If you have any questions, you can contact Nelnet at 1.888.486.4722.

The problem that I am having is that I didn't even attened that school for a year. Everything I did was through the school. I didn't go through anyone else but the school, which obviously set it up with nelnet. With a liberty grant and Financial Aid I don't see how it could be 14,000. This isn''t Yale University that I'm talking about. And another thing...Is Nelnet a federal loan company?

Here's how it works:

Tuition due = x.  From that they subtracted the grant and the $5500 from a Perkins or Direct student loan (which is capped at $5500 per year for undergraduates). Anything remaining is paid for by the student.  Since your balance due is $14000, it sounds as if you have a student loan from a private lender, and I suspect that's Nelnet.

You had to sign a promissory note for the loans, and those documents will explain the loan in more detail. Your first call should be to Nelnet and ask them to explain in detail what loans you are expected to pay back.

If your six month grace period is up, make payment arrangements. You do NOT want to default on student loans because it will come back to bite you.  There are all kinds of deferments and forebearance options for those who can't pay.

Good luck!
