I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one who had this problem. All I did was google "Custom Built renewal contract" and I landed here. I signed a contract with the understanding that I would be making 10 payments of $100 each month until June 2008. My trainer and I both knew that I was not continuing my training with her when my contract was up, because I had switched gyms. She did not mention anything to me about needed to cancel my contract in a written format to Custom Built. I checked my July credit card statement and saw that I was no longer being charged for my training.

However, a couple months later I noticed the charge again and went back and saw that I was charged for August, September, October, and November. I called the company today requesting a refund for their error. That is when I was told about the "note of autorenewal" on my contract. This was never pointed out or explained to me when I signed my contract. I was under the impression that when my 10 payments were up, I was done.

I spoke with a supervisor at the company and she was nonchalant about the whole thing as if this type of stuff happens all the time and basically told me that I won't be getting a refund and if I didn't want to be charged further I needed to send in a written notice. She gave me an email address to send it to and guess what? It came back as undeliverable. I even had her spell the email address to me to make sure it would work and it didn't. So I faxed in my request and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

This is the biggest ripoff I've ever seen! How can this autorenewal be for my convenience? If I wanted to renew my contract, I could tell them so. The whole bit about having the benefit of not having our rates raised is crap. If they really wanted to offer that, then they could do so with a real renewal contract. The only person this benefits is Custom Built, so they can rake in the payments before the customer notices they are being billed. I can't believe this company could get away with something like this.

I hope the owner will try to contact me about this. I looked on the other websites and it stated to have the customer contact the owner to get a refund at the number on the website, but I didn't see a number to contact.

I had a pretty good experience with my trainer with positive results. I would hate to leave this like this because the company she works for made bad choices.

Well, after giving all the details to Custom Built we are still in dispute. They refuse to cancel my contract until I pay them the extra months they have been charging me after my one year contract is up. Plus, after receiving several written notices by me cancelling my contract they still are continuing charging me $100 per month as if I haven't cancelled my contract. I've explained to them that the auto renewal clause was not explained to me properly. I was told it was to take my payments out of my account every month of my 1 year contract. So even after explaining all of this they will not cancel my agreement with them. I did my one year and I'm month-to-month and I don't even belong to that gym anymore. The whole thing is ludicrous. I had a very good credit rating before all of this and now I fear its going down the tubes because I got involved with these crooks. Judy Miller has asked me to contact her in customer service but I have not heard from her and I keep getting harrassing emails from their collection agency. Judy Miller, I ask you to do the right thing and cancel my agreement and clear my account. I did not receive any training services after my one year contract so I should not be charged. Your employee who went over the contract with me did not explain the auto-renewal clause properly because if she had I would have never agreed to that knowing I would not be a member of that gym after my one year contract. Please stop taking advantage of good people like myself. Your company was in the wrong and made the error. Please fix my account and stop asking me for more money. I will not be paying anything more to your company. Whatever happened to the phrase "the customer is always right".

Auto Renewal not mandatory

We are unable to look into the specifics of your account without your name and the location of the gym that you receive your training in. If you do not wish to disclose this information publicly, I invite you to email Custom Built directly.

The email address for Customer Service is customerservice@custombuiltpt.com.

The Custom Built Personal Training contract has a separate place that a client must initial to request auto renewal. It is not mandatory that you elect auto renewal in order to use personal training services with Custom Built. The procedure for cancelling the auto renewal is also clearly outlined in the agreement.

Any sessions that were paid for during auto renewal are valid for up to four months from your last draft date.
