My husband and I recently purchased a GM Certified 2004 Chevy Malibu from Buck Chevrolet in Canal Fulton. They are a bunch of scam artist! When it came time to sign the papers they brought in a smooth talking guy that introduced himself as Jeff, the paper work guy. They added extra charges to our financing, and when we questioned them about it the paper work guy told us, "I don't know what that is, I didn't work your finances." We later found out that our paper work guy is the general manager of the store! We were also told that banks no longer allow monthly payments; they require bi-weekly payments. We told them we did not want bi-weekly payments, and we were told "too bad". After getting home and looking over the paperwork more in depth, it was an equity group that the dealership made money off of that required the bi weekly payments! My husband contacted the bank and was told that they do not require the extra charges or bi weekly payments!! Upon contacting the dealership we were once again told, "Too bad papers are already signed." We also did not receive copies of all of the papers that we signed. When we asked for them we were told that we had received all of the copies that the customer needed. The day after buying the car, our air conditioner condenser went out! It was charged at the dealership because of a whirring noise it was making, which temporarily fixed the problem. Then my husband found a broken pulley on the tensioner unit. The dimmer switch fell out of the dash board on the way home from the dealership. It was broken and had been glued in!! Our key less entry didn't work properly. We also found that there wasn't an owner's manual in the vehicle! When I called them I was told it was not required for GM Certification. And we just found out that the power mirror switch that was missing when we bought the car, and were told would be covered under our warranty, is not covered under our warranty but should have been done under the GM certification!! When contacting the dealership I am told," We'll get back to you." That evening we obtained a copy of the GM certification check off list requirements. There were six items that were faulty on our vehicle that passed inspection and should not have. When I finally received my call back from the salesman, one day, five hours and three calls later, I am told that they will not reimburse us for paying to have the mirror switch replaced. Our salesman, Nick Huff, said the he was not paying for work done by another dealer. I said that it should have been fixed before it was ever put on the lot, in which he replied that no one knew it was broken. What a liar! Who is going to miss the fact that the mirrors aren't able to be adjusted, especially since the car had been in their lot for 9 months! I also brought up the owner's manual being required for GM Certification and he once again lied to me and told me it wasn't required even though I have the proof right in front of me! They are falsely certifying vehicles and people need to be aware of these scam artists before they lose money to them also!

Exactly right

You're exactly right. That's why many dealers do it. Unethical. Unfortunately, a large percentage of the population truly doesn't know better--they know to be skeptical, but they're not effective, and it's sleazy to take advantage of them. Not different morally than stealing--it's taking their money without providing any additional desired value. It's just done in a technically legal manner.

Business Knowledge?

You don't need an MBA to know you do not legally obligate yourself to contractual terms and conditions without knowing what those terms and conditions are. To not read a contract before signing it is just plain stupid. Car dealers know many of their customers will do just that so they add extra's.

More clear? Yes.

Car dealers are generally deceptive.  Sorry.  Possibly not the employee who posted above, but in my experience, most are.  Could the paperwork possibly be more clear?  Certainly.  In my experience, the "paperwork guy" uses body language and other non-verbal cues to create a very compelling atmosphere that the customer shouldn't question what they are signing because it's "routine paperwork".  Further, additonal paperwork such as arbitration agreements are produced as if it's just another part of the required legal paperwork to complete the sale.  Junk.  I've simply kindly told "the paperwork guy" (different dealerships--I haven't bought at Buck), "No thank you.  I'm not signing that."  That's an agreement that is in the interest of the dealership, but not required for the sale.  He didn't question my decision and just moved on.  That confirms that even the "paperwork guy" knows the ruse.

I wonder, how many other dealerships pull how many similar shady stunts?  And how many people in the general public have the business knowledge to recognize this?

Unethical at best.

Sincerely,

Mike

The other side of the coin

#7UPDATE Employee

All customers are offered (in compliance with state and federal lending disclosures) options for warranties, gap, credit life and disability insurance in a menu format. These options are reviewed with every customer and the customer chooses the options that best suits them. A customer signs on the OPTIONS THEY WANT and sign WAIVERS for the OPTIONS they don't. The paper work is printed and reviewed with the customer.

As for the structure of lender repayments, a monthly and biweekly option are offered to the customer and (again) the customer makes a choice that best suits their needs.

Every option is itemized and the customer signs in multiple places accepting the options they wanted. I do not know how this can be any clearer.

The only regret I have is the customer didnt bring the car back here fir us to resolve their issues for them rather then taking it to another dealer and assuming we would give them a "blank check" to fix whatever it is they allege needed fixing. We don't "charge" aircondition, we fix them as needed.

I have 4 children, I teach them personal responsibility and an expectation of living up to their decisions. I don't use them as an excuse for why I'm a "victim"

The options were clearly disclosed.

Do you have children?

Ever been in a situation where you have a child with you and they take complete advantage of you being distracted? Try having a fussy one year old with you when you have been at a dealership that you drove one and a half hours to get to and just spent five hours at. Our fatal mistake was even driving to that dealership in the first place.

One Line Tells It All....

#7Consumer Suggestion

Here it is in your exact words:....."after getting home and looking over the paperwork more in depth.....".

All the rest of the problems, (which would have been discovered by a competent mechanic which you should have used to check out the car), would have been avoided if you would have halted the sales process AT THE START! If the payment arrangements and the bogus fees were NOT to acceptable to you, then WHY DID YOU SIGN THE CONTRACT??????????? Why didn't you do this "in depth" lookover BEFORE you signed the stuff?

All they have to do now is show the SIGNED CONTRACT with your signature which YOU AGREED TO.

What do you expect anybody to do now?

Again, and this is like a broken record...you read the paperwork BEFORE you sign it.
Also, the car dealer needs you...YOU don't need the car dealer. When they treat you like garbage or try to scam you, you don't just sit there and play doormat...you get up and walk out!
