I followed an ad in the newspaper classifieds for a job listed as:

East Baton Rouge Parish Factory Outlet HIRING NOW! $1600/mo - Will Train coMust be 18 yrs + coPermanent F/T 15 Immediate Opening for our Appliance & Customer Service Dept. 368-0047 Mon-Fri, 9-5

There is no Appliance and Customer Service Dept. They sell Kirby vacuum cleaners for $2065.55, when the factory cost is $350. They mislead every person that applied for these positions, as we were told that we would be demonstrating the product to secured potential customers. They told us there were "canvasers" who set up appointments with potentials ahead of time, and we simply showed up at the agreed time at their home to demonstrate. In reality, we were toted around town in a suburban and went door-to-door soliciting a horribly over-priced cleaning system, lying to the people whose doors we knocked on telling them that each demo we did earned us $25 towards our college tuition. What bothers me the most is that the hiring manager made a comment the first day of training stating "there's not a whole lot available in the job market these days so young people such as yourself need a stable job they can make a career of." They know there aren't many good jobs out there for college-aged people like myself, and they exploit our need to earn an income to put large amounts of money in their own pockets.

I have heard much worse stories about this company, like the company owner giving advances of pay to "new dealers", as we were called, under the assumption it would be payed back with the commission earned from sales. If the dealer didn't make the sales, they then owe this guy money. I can't verify these claims as they are essentially hear-say, but after my own experience with these people I wouldn't put it past them.

If you see an ad like this, please make sure you ask lots of questions before you ever sign your name to anything, as sadly, all these people want is money, yours, or anyone else they can bamboozle into buying or selling their product for them.
