"David" contacted me regarding a property that my mom was trying to sell herself before contacting a realtor. He claimed to be a real estate agent in Florida who could sell an out of state property in New England. He asked for the asking price, address, and photos, but never emailed any of the documents that are part of a realtors' agreement. I thought it was very odd that he wasn't concerned about where the property was located and also never included any credentials.

He emailed my mom, too, and she became suspicious of him and didn't respond, aside from asking for his office address and phone number. When he received no responses, he emailed me with a sob story about how he was "sorrowful that [I] hadn't decided to use his services" (uh, hello, the property wasn't mine to begin with!) I guess when people don't take the bait, they switch to guilt trip tactics.

It finally turned out that the address/phone number he gave belonged to someone else in Washington DC (not Florida where he claimed to be from, so he can't even keep his stories straight). Not only that, but his email address that appeared to be from a realtors' site, was actually a mail.com-related address.

If you're selling a house (or anything else), use extreme caution when dealing with people on the Internet!
