I purchased a 2006 ML 350 from this dealer on 8/20. On 8/26 the car would not start and according to the Mercedes Benz technician, it was clearly a bad transmission and he apologized profusely and said he would dispatch a tow truck. When the tow truck guy got there, he ripped the gear shift stick off, took a screw driver and jambed it into the steering column, went under the seats and went under the hood to do I don't know what.

I called roadside to document what had happened and the dispatcher talked to the driver. Roadside also told me that they are required to bring the vehicle to the closest dealer, and since I was in Manhattan, that would be Mercedes of Manhattan. I asked that they bring it to Freehold, they said they could not. The technician said my dealer would reimburse for any travels over the weekend. I rented a vehicle that cost me $120 for the day.

I called David Michael over the weekend and after numerous calls to customer assistance and to my sales rep, I finally got a call back from the Freehold, and he says that he was still not doing anything for me. I told him that that sounds to me like a MB purchased at his dealership should only be driven in the immediate area because god forbid it breaks down, even if it is a factory defect, they do not care. He said "yes". There is something seriously wrong with this picture...I did not buy a $45,000 car to be left without transportation after a week!

If you bought the vehicle in TX and you were vacationing in PA, would you want it taken back to TX? or would you prefer that it be fixed at a dealership near where you were? (BTW that happened to my husband and I.)

All certified dealerships are supposed to have qualified mechanics to work on the cars there. (Be it a 45,000 dollar car or a 5000 dollar jalopy.)

My husband also had to go to the dealership for work on another car. He had bought the car in WA, and now lived in TX. But I guess it was a rip off (bad service, etc.) Because they wouldn't tow it all that way.

I am sorry for what the tow truck driver did. But even though I know that Jersey and NY are close I also know that tow companies charge an arm and a leg to cross state lines. (Even when it's down the block.)

Next time buy a BMW.. They have unmatched quality of service.. Their Road Side Assistance is #1.. Trade the MB in on a BMW them take it to them to look at a quality car.

Go over the manager's head and see what happens

In response to the manager's "yes" to your concerns that the dealership will only cater to problems that occur in the area of the dealership....I would place a call to Mercedes-Benz Corporation and voice your concern about the shoddy treatment you've received from this specific dealership (especially given the fact that you spoke to the manager of the dealership). Some manufacturers divorce themselves from dealership practice (I received this from Volkswagen..."We can't control what goes on at the dealerships"). Mercedes-Benz may find this to be of great concern to themselves. If anything, they should be aware of how this particular dealership treats one of their customers....and worse, a potential loyal (i.e. repeat) customer. I don't know if calling Mercedes-Benz will help resolve the problem (hopefully they will step in), but at least they will be made aware that one of their franchise dealerships is acting in a less-than professional manner when it comes to THEIR customers.

Best of luck in resolving this issue.
