Boat on Craigslist using amazon payments
I recently was looking at buying a boat on lexington Craigslist when I found what looked like a great deal(one of the too good to be true ones). They had a 2006 seadoo challenger 180 boat for sale for $4200. That boat in that year and model sells for around $14000 to $15000. I responded to the seller hoping it would be a local deal. This is the email I got back. Sent from a David Penn USAF ssgt. or a scammer using that name and rank.
Hello,
My name is David, and Im emailing you about the 2006 Sea Doo Challenger I have for sale. The boat is in perfect condition, with no need for any additional repairs. Flawless condition, no dents and no mechanical problems. It has never been in salt water. It has 215 HP Supercharged and it comes with trailer and all the extras included. It has a clear title with no loans or liens on it. The price was reduced at $4,200 as I need to sell the boat before the 3th of June when I will be leaving with my platoon back to Afghanistan, so I dont want it getting old in my backyard.
If you have any other questions, or need more info, please feel free to ask.
Thank you,
David
This tipped me off a little because the Airforce does not have platoons, they are grouped into wings, groups, squadrons and flights. But I was curious so proceeded a little further and asked for his number and that I wanted to come look at it in Lexington. I got an email back ..
Hi Brandon,
Right now I am at the military base getting ready for Afghanistan. This means that I am doing a special training and I am not allowed to get out of the unit. The boat is already at the shipping company in Topeka KS sealed and ready for the shipping. My presence wont be necessary because I prearranged the deal with Amazon. The deal includes free delivery and it will arrive at your address in 3 days. You will have 5 days to test it and inspect it prior to making any purchase and if by any reason you find something you dont like about it you can send it back at my expense.
If you are interested in knowing more info about how it works, i can ask Amazon to send you an email with more information on how to purchase it. Amazon will contact you shortly after they have the details with all the information that you need to complete this deal and you will also have proof that I am covered by them and a legitimate seller. If you would like to receive the email from Amazon with all the transaction information please reply with your full name and phone # and they will contact you right away.
Regards
I did the research on amazon payments and they are a real company. I also received two emails from amazon payments.. They looked very authentic with logos, transaction numbers and payment protection and payment details. I called the 800 number to talk to them and they didnt answer but had an answering machine. I left a message and got a call back from a 202 area code with a guy calling from amazon payments and he had a foreign accent, which of course could be one of their call center people. I researched it further and found the exact scam. This is a very elaborate scam, please pay attention to detail and only buy local.

" This is a very elaborate scam, please pay attention to detail and only buy local. "
There is nothing at all elaborate about this scam. It can be run by a single scammer. Like most other scams, it attempts to get you to send cash to a stranger via and untraceable means (Western Union, Moneygram, GreenDot...). That is the one common denominator in Internet scams because it's the only way the scammer can get paid without leaving a trace.
Anyone bothering to pay attention to the warning at the top of EVERY Craigslist post would avoid all forms of this scam.
