My son, who now lives in Florida, closed a Sprint cell phone account in October of 2002 after actually overpaying on the service. Sprint sent us a refund check in January 2003 to settle the account and close the books. Debt Recovery Solutions sent him a threatening letter at our home address dated 12/6/06 for an "outstanding balance" of $94.36, stating a negative credit report had already been sent to one of the credit reporting agencies because he had "failed to fulfill the terms of your credit obligations."

They also stated in their letter that if he failed to notify their office in 30 days, they would assume the debt was valid and continue pursuit. Since the payment records were at our home, I tried to call them on my son't behalf to discuss it and was told they would not talk to anyone else but my son, then hung up on me.

My son dictated a reply letter to me, and I sent it along with copies of the account records to Debt Solutions showing that the account was closed in good standing.

These scam artists are just fishing for good folks who live in fear of having their credit ratings negatively impacted - they're hoping to get quick cash by referencing old accounts that have been closed (maybe they're dumpster divers?). Thank God I don't throw old bills away for 7 years or we'd have no records of this account closure to dispute this charge!
