Dell computer advertised a Maxtor Hard Drive in its configuration and that appeared on its invoice. The Hard Drive failed and it was a subpar hard drive known for failures. Their service warranty was misleading to me, in that my expectation was that they would replace a bad part and recover my system. However, a tech showed up at my door, pulled out the hard drive (I saw what kind it was), replaced it and left. He was there for 5 minutes. I had nothing. I had to call their tech support to get back to a functioning system. Their tech support service is overrated. Some of their people are knowledgeable, others are clearly reading off of a script. It took the better part of a week just to get my system back to normal. I bought from them because of their "alleged reputation". I won't make the same mistake again. I've committed myself to learning how to build a PC from scratch so that I don't experience this again. Beware of DELL. If you buy from them because you are not knowledgeable of PC's and you buy the service contract for insurance, all because you have heard of their good reputation, you may be setting yourself up for a ripoff and a very disappointing experience.

Buy a Gateway and you dont have to worry about calling Tech support. There are two loacal Gateway Country Stores in the Kansas City area. Think before you buy..........

Bernie from Davie Florida has rebutted my complaint based on his contention that my situation must have been a rare case. How does he know this, what gives him the right to say this. I take offense to any a*****e defending a company that clearly build a machine for me in a fraudulent manner. Read my original complaint. I can prove they built my machine with at least one component that was fraudulent and that is the one that failed. Dell can't possibly prove otherwise and Bernie ought to shut the hell up. What is Bernie's motivation for defending Dell? I don't care what anyone else's experience has been. My experience was a ripoff and THAT IS WHAT THIS SITE IS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR.

I feel that yours was probably an unusual case with Dell. I recently purchased both a desktop computer and a laptop from Dell. I've had no problems whatsoever from the desktop (Dimension 8200 P4 1.9), but only 4 days after turning on my laptop, I received an error message. I couldn't get the laptop to reboot. Finally called support, got through right away, and we determined that the ide channel on the motherboard went bad. I was given a number to call to make arrangements for return. I called the number, which turned out to be Airborne Express, and that afternoon, they were at my business with a shipping box made specifically for holding a laptop. Airborne took the box on a Tuesday afternoon. I received my laptop back on Thursday morning, less than 2 days later.

I also purchase computers for our company. I've purchased a few(thankfully only a few)Compaqs and a few HP's. But 90 percent of my purchases have been Dell's and they are far and away the most reliable and easiest to work on.

While you may have had an unfortunate experience with Dell, it's not fair to condemn the whole company on that basis.
