I asked the salesman what the least expensive tower with office suite on it would cost and also told the person I wanted to be able to do dsl and dial-up on the computer. The salesman said I would get MSWorks and I confirmed that it would have Word, Access on it and I was told "yes". What I received a was a dented computer with no modem and a Word program that was 10 years old!

While they said they would replace the computer because of the dent, they wouldn't save money by just sending me the Word and other programs they said they would in a compensation trade! I spent 1.5 to 2 hours being transferred 7 times to no avail. To replace the computer would cost me 5 - 8 hours of loading new software on it, which is too much time.

I also bought $200 of an extended 3 warranty, only to be told (in a 10 minute sales pitch) that I should pay more to get personal technical service when all I wanted to do was get help to hook up the 3 leads from the stereo system to the computer. Because it would take too much time and effort to send this back, I'm stuck with it :-(

Tech help is better

I had a number of new computer file transfer issues mixed with onboard Dell back-up programs that started every 7th day the computer started and the tech person and his manager were of nice help in getting 3 or 4 issues cleared up, even though I only called with a few initial ones. The whole experience (once I got to the tech) was very nice. One issue is that the company wants more money to go directly to a personal tech, but I'm a bit closer to such without paying more money (than $200 for 3 years).

One nice thing Dell did was allow a certain software upgrade, as we missed the deal by 2 weeks, for my senior mom on a nice deal. I don't want to relate the exact details, but it was a very nice gesture on Dell's part and has made me happier with the purchase.

Hi, As an employee at Dell I know that 1) your Word was not 10 years old... Dell does not carry old software. 2) Yes a tech is not going to come on site to assist you in setting up some cables!!?? 3) You asked for cheap and thats what you got. I speak to people all day that say they want the cheapest $299 system and will not pay a penny extra. I feel you are a little exagerant in saying the rep told you that MS Works would have Word, Access, etc... BECAUSE that is a $400 program and I sure you wanted some low grade negative priced system that only hurt the rep placing the order. That being said that rep would have JUMPED at the chance of getting you some office productivity software on there but in my experience I am sure you declined the option and stayed at that low price of $299.

Dell does have a 21 day return policy so if you got it and realized it did not have the proper software why did you not call back to have it returned and repurchase it with the $400 software you so greatly declined in the first place.

Anyhow, you get what you pay for and a being a little self sufficiant would have payed off in your case. Chuck it up and pay for what you want. Have you not learned yet that nothing in this world is free???

Not defending Dell here, because the dented computer and lack of modem are a problem BUT you did request the cheapest computer they had with office suite, DSL, and dial up.

The computer included word, just not the newest version of word which would add 150$ to the machine's cost. So you GOT Word, the old version works just fine.

When you order a cheap computer, expect sub-par setup, programs, and parts.

90% of computers these days do not have traditional dial-up modems. Just ethernet cards or wireless systems.

You say you are stuck with it, but they did offer you a trade for the dent? It sounds like, sans modem, you are getting exactly what you asked for.
