WOW! What a horrific experience I had. I bought a Dell computer and printer in 2005 after I received money as a Xmas gift. It was probably the dumbest thing I have ever done.

I know how to take care of a computer, since I am a Computer Science major. I am currently only using 10% of my hard drives capacity and I run a virus scan, defrag, and error checking on my computer on a weekly basis. The computer started giving me hell a few days after the warranty expired. I seem to have fixed the problem with that.

The printer is a different story. Only 2 days after my warranty on it expired, it would no longer accept paper! When it would actually print, it would feed the paper in crooked. I tried realigning the printer and everything else you can with a printer and nothing worked. I finally got so fed up, I unhooked the d**n thing and hooked up my mom's old HP printer. I have had no problems with that even though it is at least 6 years old!

I called Dell to complain but they did nothing. They said since the warranty was expired, they could not replace the printer. The lady then informed me I should've purchased a longer warranty!! Uh I'm a student and I can't afford that! I was lucky I could even afford a printer and a computer in the first place.

I will never buy a thing from Dell again and I hope no one else does either!

But, my brother in law bought a Dell system with the free cheap-o printer, and the printer says "Dell" on the front, but when you turn it over, the label with the serial number says HP.

Ummmm... I thought DELL & HP had a falling-out some 4 years back....

I believe that DELL had objected to an HP Computer marketing initiative inspired by HP's then-CEO Fiorina, and I remember that DELL then responded by outsourcing the manufacture of their new line of DELL printers rather than sell HP printers....

Computer printers are like blood glucose meters: You essentially give away the machine and then you make your fortune on the proprietary consumable supplies, i.e. the ink cartridges, or the blood glucose test strips.

My HP printer is still working after 7 years and it also mangles a page every few weeks so that I do not take it for granted..... an HP still gets to sell me replacement HP ink cartridges!

Dell doesn't make printers. They usually are HP printers, with the Dell name on them. And in this case, they are correct. If your warranty is expired, you have nothing to complain about. Just because you couldn't afford to buy an extended warranty doesn't mean Dell should replace things that break. Printers are so cheap nowadays, under $100 for a lot of models. The printer that Dell supplied is a cheap-o. They don't last a long time.
