I just want to thank all of you for responding to our problem with Delta airlines. Especially my cousin Bobby in Seattle who let me know about this website and is working so hard to help. My mother is the 73 year old, who was in the intensive care unit and unable to fly.

I just want Delta and the other airlines to change their policy. I can understand that people take advantage when changing their itinerary and that this causes problems with buying fuel, etc. However if the airlines were actually sympathetic towards the flying public in situations such as these, they would find more faithful customers.

Wouldn't it be simpler for them to charge the same price for all coach seats, certainly more for first class and a standard $35.00 or even $50.00 to change a flight? Those are reasonable.

Then we would all know what it costs to fly to see grandma and there are no surprises.

If there are circumstances that you cannot control, such as an illness or disability, death or major illness, then the airlines should reduce the rate only after you show them a confirmation letter from the physician.

My mother already paid for her ticket, she is not asking for a free one, she just cannot fly while laying in a hospital bed!

There are STANDARD Fees

You mention Standard Fees for ticket changes. There is pretty much of a standard of $100.00 per Ticket change. There is a lot more than just adjusting Fuel Load when you make a change. There are behind the scene Security Issues that have to take place everyt time a ticket is issued. I understand that sometime MEDICAL Issues come up that prevent you from traveling as planned. That is what the CHANGE FEE is for. It is to allow you to make changes in your ITINERARY dates without having to refund your ticket & then purchase another one. You do however have to still live up to whatever other FARE RULES that are associated with your ticket. These may include a 21 day Advance Purchase or Change, Stay over a SATURDAY Night etc. I wish you well & hope your mother gets well soon & can travel to visit her family.
