i shipped a classic car with dependable auto shippers from san diego to nj on jan 4, 2007. on jan 22, 2007 i got a phone call that my car caught on fire in their linden, nj lot on january 20, 2007 and was totalled. they have since refused to pay for the car even when i bought insurance from them in the amount of $ 50,000.00. they have lied about how the fire started and their stories keep changing. i did not take out insurance on my own as they assured me the car was 'fully insured while in their care" i never even saw the car or touched the car!!! this is horrible and i have started my own lawsuit against them.

if anyone else has had similar experiences please let me know. thanks..

With all auto transport companies, there is a clause that states your car is insured DURING TRANSPORT. Being parked at the terminal is not considered transport, that is probably what they are trying to pull on you right now.

However, the terminal itself IS insured. You need to go after them as well as DAS. One of the reasons it could've caught fire is the voltage regulator hung when they turned off the motor. This would be considered a flaw in the car, and not covered by their insurance, but they would have to get expert testimony to prove that is what happened.

This doesn't help now, but everyime I buy and ship a classic, I call Hagerty insurance company and insure the car before I have it shipped. Then, if something happens, it's fully covered, and they go after the shipping company, which did happen when I shipped a car with DAS. My claim was covered immediately.
